UPDATE:<\/strong> Hawthorn<\/a> will challenge captain James Sicily<\/a>'s one-match ban offered by the match review officer on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Sicily was sanctioned for kicking following an incident during the Hawks' 24-point loss to the Bombers<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Sicily's tribunal hearing will take place on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

If his appeal is unsuccessful, he will miss the Hawks' second-round match against the Demons on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

Tensions were high from the very first minute of the round-one clash at the MCG.<\/p>\n

As the \ufeffBombers<\/a> celebrated Matt Guelfi's goal in the first term, Sicily proceeded to hip-and-shoulder Essendon defender Andrew McGrath.<\/p>\n

Sicily then kicked McGrath, causing him to flip and land on his back before teammates came to his aid.<\/p>\n

The Hawks leader's action was graded as intentional conduct, medium impact and body contact, with one week on the sidelines offered as a punishment.<\/p>\n

E\ufeffssendon defender Mason Redman was also handed a one-match suspension for rough contact during the match after his hand connected with Jai Newcombe's jaw in another melee in the second quarter.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Redman has been charged with striking with the action graded as intentional conduct, low impact and high contact.<\/p>\n

Redman's strike\ufeff has been likened to a strike from Carlton's George Hewett on Lion Lachie Neale in their Opening Round match.<\/p>\n

It was a similar action to Redman's, with Hewett also striking \ufeffNeale's jaw.<\/p>\n

Hewett was offered\ufeff and accepted a $2500 fine despite his hit looking quite damning under the league's new strengthened MRO regulations and tribunal guidelines<\/a> on smothers, run-down tackles and striking.<\/p>\n

The new rules intend to further deter players from striking as the MRO defaults to grade hits as "intentional rather than careless".<\/p>\n

Such acts include when a player seeks "to fend and push their opponent" or "where a player intends to forcefully push or fend an opposition player off the ball (including to gain separation to contest the ball)" that causes a "strike".<\/p>\n

With Hewett receiving a fine, Redman's one-week suspension has caused uproar across the league.<\/p>\n

Former AFL player Nathan Brown<\/a>argued that match review officer Michael Christian\ufeff "could not" punish the Bomber<\/a> with a week off considering how they handled Hewett's situation.<\/p>\n

"They could not \ufeffgive [Redman] a week after what happened last week," Brown said on Nine's Sunday Footy Show<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Leading journalist Damian Barrett also believed the situation has been "muddied" by the MRO's weak punishment for Hewett.<\/p>\n

"It looks \ufeffpretty clear cut and under the changes to the rules in the off-season with any form of contact to the head \u2014 to me, I think it would have merited a week off," he said.<\/p>\n

"But \ufeffwe saw last week George Hewett make contact with Lachie Neale<\/a> [and avoid suspension] and I think that has muddied the situation before they adjudicate that in round one."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
