A nightmare final round at The Players Championship<\/a> included a little comedy for American golfer<\/a> Austin Eckroat.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old who scored his first PGA Tour<\/a> win at The Cognizant Classic only a few weeks ago suffered a cruel fate when chasing the pack at TPC Sawgrass on Monday morning (AEDT).<\/p>\n

Already over par for the round, but still sitting 5-under overall and putting for \ufeffbirdie on the 12th, Eckroat's putt skimmed the edge of the hole and settled just millimetres from falling into the cup.<\/p>\n

With the ball still a chance of falling and the birdie being crucial to Eckroat's slim winning chances, the golfer took his time getting up to play his next stroke.<\/p>\n

Hilariously, both Eckroat and his playing partner Joel Dahmen stood watching the ball for a number of seconds, before finally it fell into the hole without anyone touching it.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"\ufeffTake the casual walk up there to start the clock," the commentator said.<\/p>\n

"We're all looking, we're all watching…\ufeff the clock starts ticking.<\/p>\n

"It looks like it's leaning… we're past 10 seconds. It falls in, but what about the time?"<\/p>\n

While Eckroat didn't touch the ball to make it fall into the cup, he still didn't get to card a birdie for the hole.<\/p>\n

PGA Tour rules analyst Mark Dusbabek\ufeff explained why Eckroat's birdie didn't count.<\/p>\n

"You're allowed a reasonable amount of time to get to the hole (after a shot), and then an additional 10 seconds from that point," Dusbabek said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIf the ball falls in during that 10 seconds it was holed by its last stroke. In this case it fell after the 10 seconds, so you count it as holed but you add one penalty stroke.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt was a reasonable amount of time for him to get there, you can't delay your walk and lollygag around."<\/p>\n
