S\ufeffcottie Scheffler<\/a> has won his second-straight Players Championship,<\/a> with a late miss from Wyndham Clark sealing the result in Florida.<\/p>\n

In a dramatic finish, Scheffler finished with 20-under but the fate of the result was placed in Clark's hands for a potential playoff.<\/p>\n

But in one of the most agonising finishes in recent memory, last year's US Open winner's putt to tie Scheffler and send the tournament to a playoff lipped out of the hole after the ball had almost sunk below ground level, and he finished 19-under alongside two other players.<\/p>\n

Scheffler will pocket a cool (AUD) \ufeff$6.9 million for the victory, while Clark will split the second-placed prize with Xander Schauffele and Brian Harman, with each player taking home $2.9 million for their efforts.<\/p>\n

Clark's costly miss in the closing stages cost him the chance to play for an extra $4 million in a two-man playoff.<\/p>\n

"Unbelievable," the commentator said.<\/p>\n

"How did that not drop? What a finish… that ball was almost all the way down below the surface of the hole and spun all the way back.<\/p>\n

"Never thought it was missing."<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old was left "gutted" by the cruel twist of fate and couldn't believe the ball failed to go into the hole.<\/p>\n

"It was coming with some speed… I don't know how that putt doesn't go in," Clark said.<\/p>\n

"I thought it was going to go inside left, and then even when it seemed to lip I thought it would lip in … I'm pretty gutted it didn't go in.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Right now I'm pretty down. It just sucks, I've always dreamt and wanted to make a putt that forced playoffs or win a tournament, and I've yet to do it in my professional career. <\/p>\n

"I'm still beside myself, I'm shocked that putt didn't go in"<\/p>\n

His fatal error brought on a swift reaction on social media, proving once again the 'brutal' and 'filthy' nature of the sport. \ufeff<\/p>\n

With the victory on Monday (AEDT), Scheffler became the first player to ever defend the Players Championship title at TPC Sawgrass.<\/p>\n

"It's pretty special," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's tough enough to win one Players, so to have it back-to-back is extremely special."<\/p>\n
