Troubled Melbourne<\/a> midfielder Clayton Oliver<\/a> received a standing ovation from the Demons faithful after collecting 35 disposals in their 45-point win over the Western Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

Oliver has been in the spotlight over the off-season for multiple reasons, including his early exit from the club's training camp<\/a> at the end of 2023, following intense\ufeff trade speculation<\/a> as well as a brief hospital visit<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

There was also suggestions that there was internal distrust within the Demons' four walls due to the erratic behaviour from Oliver.<\/p>\n

Oliver's return to the senior side was fast tracked due to the heartbreaking retirement of midfielder Angus Brayshaw, playing in the Demons' 22-point loss to Sydney in Opening Round.<\/p>\n

But it was his round one performance that finally felt like the old Oliver, who starred in Melbourne's 2021 premiership side, was back.<\/p>\n

After picking up 21 touches to half time, the 26-year-old\ufeff continued to demand respect from the Bulldogs, going on to collect 35 for the match.<\/p>\n

When Oliver was brought to the bench in the dying moments of the match, he received a standing ovation from the Melbourne crowd.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Post match, the midfielder says the support\ufeff moved him.<\/p>\n

"A little bit emotional, I got chills down my spine\ufeff. We love the Melbourne faithful," Oliver said on Fox post match.<\/p>\n

In October last year he was admitted to hospital after a seizure<\/a>, the cause of which was partially attributed to side effects of an ADHD medication.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old then took extended personal leave in January after he was sent home early from a pre-season camp<\/a><\/p>\n

"It's been a tough couple of months, but to have Gawny the whole time, and the rest of the boys help me out\ufeff … it's all worth it at the end of the day," Oliver said.<\/p>\n

However, Oliver knows that he is a long way off repaying the group, despite his electric performance\ufeff that guided the Demons to their first win of 2024.<\/p>\n

"No definitely not (paid back), still got a lot of work to do.\ufeff Little steps along the way. This is one of them to be a better person and better teammate," he said.<\/p>\n

Dees skipper Max Gawn lauded Oliver's performance, despite Oliver playing down his impact through the middle.<\/p>\n

"Its' been noted how much the Melbourne faithful are behind Clarry and I'm sure you feel that," Gawn said post win.<\/p>\n

"What we see from Clayton is that he's had such a tormental little period but he's running into 50, going in for goal and he still passes off to Jacob (Van Rooyen).<\/p>\n

"That's the player we got and I'm excited for the best version of Clayton this year.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
