A\ufeffustralian distance-running<\/a> champions Lauren Ryan and Jack Rayner shattered national records in California on Sunday (AEDT), clocking scorching times over 10,000m.<\/p>\n

Ryan broke the 20-year national women's record set by Benita Willis, posting 30:35.36 to trim two seconds from the Australian running great's mark.<\/p>\n

And just after Ryan's epic 25-lap run at Sound Running's The Ten in San Juan Capistrano\ufeff, Rayner took down his own Australian men's record with a run of 27:09.57.<\/p>\n

The Olympian<\/a> slashed five seconds off the national record, which he had set at the same meet in 2022.<\/p>\n

Ryan punched her ticket for an Olympic debut by nailing her first qualifier, dipping under the 30:40.00 Paris 2024<\/a> entry standard while obliterating her personal best by 94 seconds.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old, who hails from Melbourne but is based in the US city of Baltimore, rocketed from 23rd in the all-time Australian women's 10,000m rankings to the top, overtaking revered distance runners such as Lisa Ondieki, Eloise Wellings, Sinead Diver and previous record holder Willis.<\/p>\n

The record-breaking runs of Ryan\ufeff and Rayner are reminiscent of December 4, 2022, when Diver and Brett Robinson broke the Australian women's and men's marathon records on the same day. Diver's run was in Valencia and Robinson's Fukuoka.<\/p>\n

At Melbourne's Zatopek:10 in December, Ryan pipped Rose Davies and Holly Campbell in an enthralling 10,000m race<\/a> to clinch her first national title, which she dedicated to her ill grandma.<\/p>\n

Rayner grabbed the Australian men's 10,000m title on the same night. He was beaten to victory by Ireland's Andrew Coscoran but edged Patrick Tiernan for national glory.<\/p>\n

Rayner was a marathon runner at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, but pulled out about 10 kilometres in due to a stress reaction he had carried into the race.<\/p>\n
