B\ufeffenji Marshall<\/a> has fired back at criticism over his coaching style, shutting down suggestions he isn't committed enough ahead of the Wests Tigers<\/a> season opener.<\/p>\n

The club legend, who officially took over \ufeffthe reins from Tim Sheens<\/a> in the off-season, will usher in a new era at Concord today when the side take on the Raiders.<\/p>\n

Marshall has limited coaching experience but will have the respect of the playing group – many of who grew up watching the fleet-footed playmaker dominate the NRL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But after recent suggestions that the 39-year-old and his laidback approach weren't up to coaching standards, Marshall issued a fiery defence at Friday's press conference.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I didn't want to have to justify the way I do things, but what I don't like is when things are told that are not true," he told the media.<\/p>\n

"You ask anyone in the building, I'm in here at quarter-to-six training with the staff before the players get in so they see us doing the hard yards before they come.<\/p>\n

"Coaching-wise I know I've got a lot to learn and I have to work hard."<\/p>\n

Some reports also claimed that Marshall wasn't fully-committed to the role around the clock, which prompted the Kiwi icon to defend his work-life balance. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"What's a 24-7 coach? I come into work early before the players, work as hard as we can until we get what we need done, then we go home," he said.<\/p>\n

"Because I prioritise my family between 5-8pm every night to find a work-life balance, that doesn't mean I don't care about my job or care about working hard.<\/p>\n

"I don't get it … the bottom line is, it's not true."<\/p>\n

The side's trip to Canberra will mark the first official game in charge for Marshall, who oversaw a tough trial period that saw the Tigers win one game and lose another.<\/p>\n

While there are signs of nerves from the rookie coach, his decision to blood teenage star Lachlan Galvin<\/a> in the No.6 jumper is proof he is ready to make the tough calls.<\/p>\n

"Lachie is one of those guys who just plays footy, he plays what he sees, he's not overawed by situations. There's no fear in what he does.<\/p>\n
