F\ufefformer Australian Test<\/a> keeper-batter Matthew Wade<\/a> has announced his retirement from red ball cricket<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old will continue to play limited overs for Tasmania and in the Big Bash League, but next week's Sheffield Shield final will be his last first-class match.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Wade played 36 Tests for his country but hasn't worn the baggy green since January 2021.<\/p>\n

Now he's leaving the game's longest and purest format with a first-class batting average of 40.81, as well as 442 catches and 21 stumpings to his name.<\/p>\n

"I would like to thank my family, my wife Julia, and kids Winter, Goldie, and Duke, for the sacrifices they have made throughout my career, as I travelled Australia and the world as a red ball cricketer," Wade said on Friday.<\/p>\n

"I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges that the long-form game provides, and although I will continue to play white ball cricket, wearing the baggy green while playing for my country remains a highlight of my career.<\/p>\n

"I am grateful to all of my teammates throughout my career, along with Cricket Victoria for providing me with the foundations to grow as a first-class cricketer, and Cricket Tasmania for supporting me in finishing my career as a cricketer in my home state."<\/p>\n

Wade was born in Hobart but had to leave Tasmania to begin his professional cricket career, heading north to Victoria.<\/p>\n

After making his Shield debut in 2007\ufeff he enjoyed fruitful seasons with the bat in 2009-10 (677 runs) and in 2010-11 (553 runs), leading to his Test selection in 2012.<\/p>\n

In just his third Test he scored 106 against the West Indies, and would go on to score three more for Australia in the longest form.<\/p>\n

\ufeffWhile Wade could never have been genuinely regarded as the best gloveman in Australia, his talent with the bat – both at the top and in the middle order – and his fiercely competitive nature earned him selection throughout a stop-start career.<\/p>\n

He was recalled at the expense of Peter Neville to some controversy in 2016, with Wade's selection believed to be more about adding some mongrel to the Test side rather than his ability behind the stumps.<\/p>\n

After a decade with Victoria, Wade returned to Tasmania and eventually captained the state.<\/p>\n

Tasmania will take on Western Australia in next week's Shield final.\ufeff<\/p>\n
