Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull has slammed Indian Premier League favouritism for "second rate Australians" after the Black Caps thumped the Aussies in the opening T20 international on Monday.<\/p>\n

New Zealand inflicted a 53-run defeat on Australia<\/a> at Hagley Oval, powered by 99 not out from Devon Conway.<\/p>\n

India star Ravi Ashwin lamented the fact that Conway's brilliant knock came just after the IPL auction, in which in-form players were lavished with rich contracts.<\/p>\n

That's when Doull unloaded.<\/p>\n

Doull, who took 134 wickets for New Zealand, did not name and shame any particular Australian players. He produced statistics showing that IPL franchises had signed three Aussies per Kiwi, at a higher average salary.<\/p>\n

Eight Australian players were picked up in the IPL auction: Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Dan Christian, Moises Henriques, Steve Smith and Ben Cutting.<\/p>\n

Daniel Sams was traded, while Pat Cummins, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Chris Lynn, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, Josh Philippe and Marcus Stoinis were retained by their existing teams; making for 17 Aussies in total for IPL 2021.<\/p>\n

Conway went unsold at the IPL auction. Compatriots Kyle Jamieson and Adam Milne picked up lucrative contracts.<\/p>\n

While Conway is starring for New Zealand, he is another South African product playing for an adopted nation. He only became eligible for the Black Caps in August last year.<\/p>\n

The fact was not lost on South African turned England great Kevin Pietersen, who made the point to Doull.<\/p>\n
