N\ufeffew Wallabies<\/a> coach Joe Schmidt has secured his first major signing in the job.<\/p>\n

Rugby Australia<\/a> on Friday morning confirmed long-time respected mentor Laurie Fisher will join the national men's set-up as one of Schmidt's assistant coaches.<\/p>\n

It comes barely a year after Fisher, 65, was sacked by controversial former coach Eddie Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After being the first staff member axed under the Jones regime, he has now been the first hired under incoming coach Schmidt.<\/p>\n

"It's a genuine privilege to get another opportunity to work with the Wallabies," Fisher said in a statement.<\/p>\n

"I'm really excited to work alongside Joe and the team he puts together, which I know will be of the highest quality.<\/p>\n

\"Dave<\/p>\n

"There's no doubt there's a lot to do and I'm looking forward to doing my bit to contribute to the growth of the team and resurgence of Australian Rugby."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Fisher spent 18 years coaching the ACT Brumbies in the Super League.<\/p>\n

He's also been in charge of Australia's under 21 team previously, as well as with Munster in Ireland and Gloucester in England.<\/p>\n

"Laurie brings a wealth of experience to the role and is highly respected around the rugby world," Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

"Having worked with (new skills coach) Eoin (Toolan) in Ireland I know he will bring a strong attention to detail and be a very positive addition to the staff and wider team."<\/p>\n
