L\ufeffeague icon Phil Gould<\/a> believes Harry Grant<\/a> is the most likely successor to Daly Cherry-Evans<\/a> as Maroons<\/a> captain, marveling over the latter's longevity in the competition.<\/p>\n

Starting his 14th season in the NRL, Cherry-Evans was once again pivotal to a Manly win in round one against South Sydney.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old laid on a try assist in the victory \ufeffand assumed the majority of kicking duties as his halves partner Luke Brooks started off life as a Sea Eagle in the perfect way.<\/p>\n

Gould believes when the veteran halfback retires, it'll be solely his choice and no one else.<\/p>\n

"Daly Cherry-Evans is a marvel\ufeff … I watched him last week against the Rabbitohs, he doesn't look any different, he's so comfortable in his game, so comfortable in his influence on the game," he said on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles with Gus<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"He's still remarkably athletic, he doesn't fear collision. He's showing no signs of what you'd normally associate with players at the back end of their career.<\/p>\n

"I think he'll retire when he wants on his terms, I don't think the game will retire him, I don't think the game will ever go past him now.<\/p>\n

"Whether he wants to play for another couple of years I don't know. While ever he's going to play I still think he holds his place in the Origin side."<\/p>\n

Cherry-Evans' \ufefftime in the Maroons jersey has been a rollercoaster, having made his debut in 2013.<\/p>\n

The halfback then appeared in all three Origin matches the next year before sporadic appearances\ufeff. He was booed in NRL games at Brisbane and the Gold Coast after reneging on a deal with the Titans in 2015.<\/p>\n

From 2019 onwards, though, he has been a regular in the No.7 – a feat which followed the retirements of Cooper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston, along with Ben Hunt's \ufeffrepresentative move to hooker.<\/p>\n

He was named captain that year and led the side to victory in 2020, which is considered one of the most famous series wins in history.<\/p>\n

The Maroons have since won the last two under his captaincy.<\/p>\n

Gould believes the role of captain could still belong to Cherry-Evans for another few years but anointed who he believes will take over after him. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"As far as future Origin captains, I think the young hooker from Melbourne (Grant) will probably be touted as a future leader, I think they'll be organising him for that," he said.<\/p>\n

"(Pat) Carrigan's always got that type of personality as well … I would think Harry Grant is probably likely down the track but right at the moment there's no need to be worried."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
