ARLC chair Peter V'landys<\/a> has cautioned players against making public comments that could influence judiciary hearings.<\/p>\n

V'landys' \ufeffwarning comes after several current league players, including Latrell Mitchell<\/a>, voiced their support for racism victim Ezra Mam.<\/p>\n

On\ufeff Monday, Roosters recruit Spencer Leniu<\/a> was handed an eight-game ban for contrary conduct<\/a> after calling Mam a "monkey" during the Tricolous' opening-round win<\/a> over the Broncos in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

During his hearing, Leniu argued that he did not know that the slur would cause Mam, an Indigenous ma, offence or hurt.<\/p>\n

"I thought it was one brown man sledging another brown one," he said.<\/p>\n

\ufeffLeniu also claimed that he had been labelled a "monkey" and "coconut" on several occasions before but did not take offence.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the prop's judiciary hearing\ufeff, Mitchell took to his social media in support of Mam<\/a> and Indigenous peoples affected by racism, calling for Leniu to receive a lengthy ban for his behaviour.<\/p>\n

Section 31 of the NRL<\/a> code of conduct states that, "No club or person bound by this code shall comment adversely on, or with respect to\u2026 any matter which has been, is, or is likely to be, the subject of a proceeding before the ARLC, the NRL judiciary, the match review committee".<\/p>\n

V'landys commended Mam for taking a stand against racism and encouraged players to advocate for First Nation's peoples, but alerted players toward breaching the NRL's code of conduct by speaking about infringements before their date at the judiciary.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Everyone has to be given due process and natural justice," he told The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"That means that until you are given the opportunity to defend yourself, people shouldn't discuss specific cases before the judiciary.<\/p>\n

"I have no problem, however, with them speaking in a general form, but not specifically in a particular case.<\/p>\n

"In our society, everyone is afforded due process and natural justice. We need to abide by those principles. Until people have the right to defend themselves, they should not be prejudiced."<\/p>\n

The NRL has not disciplined Mitchell for his comments.<\/p>\n

Roosters legend Brad Fittler<\/a> also scolded players for speaking out while a matter is before the judicary.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's The Sunday Footy Show<\/em><\/a>, Fittler argued there are better ways to help Mam and First Nation's people than breaching the NRL's code of conduct.<\/p>\n

"Why doesn't everyone ring Ezra? Why does everything have to be done on social media?," he said.<\/p>\n

"The NRL has rules where you can't come out and make comments about situations that are going to the judiciary. So, they should be in trouble.<\/p>\n

"If you want to support Ezra, ring him up. Go and see him. That's how you support someone."<\/p>\n

Addressing the incident for the time, Roosters coach Trent Robinson<\/a> declared that Leniu's language was unacceptable but pushed back on the notion that \ufeffLeniu is racist.<\/p>\n

"To call Spencer a racist is so far from the truth \u2014 it's so far from the truth," Robinson told media on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"But is that language right? You can never use that [language], but is that happening on a daily basis? It is.<\/p>\n

"If we understand the definition of racism, it's when you use power or use your power to put someone down a class and degrade that person. If you think that an immigrant \u2014 parents from Samoa and then obviously New Zealand \u2014 and [growing up] in Mount Druitt, and he's trying to put someone down through power, then we're way off the mark."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
