AFL<\/a> football general manager Laura Kane has explained the reasoning behind Jimmy Webster's seven-week ban for his high and late hit on North Melbourne's Jy Simpkin<\/a>, declaring the landscape of concussion has simply evolved.<\/p>\n

It comes as the Footy Classified team compared that an incident from the 2023 season, which saw Collingwood's Jordan De Goey receive a three-week ban for a late hit on Eagle Elijah Hewitt.<\/p>\n

In the space of 12 months, a similar action jumped from a three-week punishment, to a seven-week one, with Kane being accused on playing catch-up with her team to punish such bumps.<\/p>\n

It's a decision the league knew had to be made, after they cracked down on \ufeffprotecting players' heads in the wake of the retirement of Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw due to concussion complications.<\/p>\n

"I think what happened last year (to De Goey) is different to what happens this year and we made that really clear with our changes to the MRO and tribunal guidelines."<\/p>\n

Collingwood player Brayden Maynard was cleared of any wrongdoing<\/a> and spared a season-ending suspension after an attempt to smother left Brayshaw unconscious for several minutes during the Magpies' seven-point qualifying final victory.<\/p>\n

Now, if a player chooses to leave the ground to smother the ball, \ufeffany reasonably foreseeable high contact with an opponent that is at least "low impact" is deemed to be "careless' at a minimum", unless the player has attempted to "minimise the force" of high contact.<\/p>\n

Kane explained how seriously the AFL took Webster's bump that occurred during a pre-season match, confirming the league was pushing for an eight-week suspension from the get-go.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We asked for eight (weeks for Webster) publicly\ufeff. It wasn't just my position, it was the whole AFL as well," Kane said.<\/p>\n

When quizzed on why De Goey's hit wasn't punished the same last year, Kane says the AFL has become more in tune with head trauma and its devastating and life-altering impacts, more than ever before.<\/p>\n

"It's different. A different landscape, a different expectation from the community," she said.<\/p>\n

"I think commentary (around concussion) is different. Opinions are really shifting. People have kids, they play community football and we absolutely don't want to see that (hits) happening."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
