M\ufeffatthew Lloyd<\/a> says Richmond<\/a>'s choices at the selection table will help the Tigers "walk taller" against Carlton<\/a> in Thursday night's round one blockbuster, as fears of a premiership hangover continue to grow.<\/p>\n

Richmond went down by 39 points at the hands of Gold Coast in Opening Round, led by former premiership coach Damien Hardwick<\/a>, who jetted up north to the Suns after his abrupt exit from Tigerland in May 2023.<\/p>\n

The Tigers, who won flags in 2017, 2019 and 2020, have been forced to reset with new coach Adem Yze, taking over with a mixture of premiership stars and newbies.<\/p>\n

To combat last week's harsh loss, the Tigers have omitted a plethora of players to make way for some star returns, in hopes of curbing the Blues' momentum.<\/p>\n

Headlined by the almighty return of superstar Dustin Martin, he'll be supported by key forward Tom Lynch, captain Toby Nankervis\ufeff and Rhyan Mansell, all entering the side for the first time in 2024.<\/p>\n

Sam Banks, Jacob Koschitzke, Sam Naismith and Samson Ryan have all be omitted from the side for their round two fixture. <\/p>\n

"They just make you walk taller\ufeff, Dustin Martin, Nankervis, Lynch, those are big ins," Lloyd said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone is sharing in Lloyd's hope for a Tigers rebound come Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Australian football champion Leigh Matthews<\/a> expressed concerns\ufeff about Richmond, explaining that he's seen it all before during his time at the Brisbane Lions, where he coached the team to back-to-back-to-back flags in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

"That post-premiership era. Richmond just look horrible really. No energy, they just couldn't get anything going (in Opening Round)," Matthews said on 3AW.<\/p>\n

"They have half a (premiership) team that is struggling. They were playing in a team that was winning mostly and thinking they 'we're one of the top dominant teams in the competition'.<\/p>\n

"Now \ufeffthat's all of a sudden not the case … the same players that were good in the premiership teams … couldn't reproduce (premiership football), when they didn't have as many good players around them.<\/p>\n

The Tigers have defeated Carlton in 10 of their last 12 meetings.<\/p>\n
