Tyrone Peachey has described former Panthers<\/a> teammate \ufeffSpencer Leniu as a "gentleman" who "loses his head on the footy field."<\/p>\n

Peachey expressed his sadness and frustration at Leniu calling Broncos star Ezra Mam a "monkey" – an act that resulted in an eight week ban and reignited the conversation about racism in the NRL.<\/a><\/p>\n

Peachey, a proud veteran of the Indigenous All Stars, said racist comments towards him were now not as common as when he started his career – but the Leniu firestorm showed it remained a big issue.<\/p>\n

"Probably when I first started (it was a problem)," the 32-year-old told Wide World of Sports at former UFC star Tyson Pedro's boxing announcement in Sydney on Wednesday.<\/a><\/p>\n

"A bit disappointing, how it is, but I've got thick skin so it's water off a duck's back for me. Now it's brought to everyone's attention and hopefully it doesn't get said anymore because I've got kids and hopefully it doesn't happen to them.<\/p>\n

"We shouldn't have to deal with that. For Spencer, kids idolise him and for him to say that – they're going to think that that's normal and we don't want that. So I'm glad that it has been called out and everyone's talking about it."<\/p>\n

Peachey and Leniu were teammates in Penrith's 2023 premiership team before Leniu crossed town to join the Roosters.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He was nothing but a gentleman to me," Peachey said.<\/p>\n

"So it was disappointing that it has come out that he said that and I feel sorry for Ezra. Everyone has their opinion and hopefully we can just move past it and get back to footy because it's been a pretty shit week… he's a good kid, he just loses his head on the footy field as we've seen last year with (Jared) Waerea-Hargreaves.<\/p>\n

"He's passionate about football and I believe he wanted to fly up to Brisbane and meet Ezra man to man and shake his hand and say sorry. So I think that was a good thing for him to do and say.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully Ezra forgives him and we can just move forward."<\/p>\n

Speaking on Brisbane's B105 Breakfast radio, NRL icon Johnathan Thurston reiterated his belief that Leniu's punishment was light 24 hours after his emotional interview on Nine's Today<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I don't think that was sufficient enough, I was thinking it should have been 12 weeks," Thurston said.<\/p>\n

"In this day and age, it's totally unacceptable in society and in our game. I thought it was a good opportunity for the NRL to come down hard on this stance.<\/p>\n
