A\ufeffustralian popstar turned swimmer Cody Simpson<\/a> has backtracked on previous claims he will retire from the pool later this year.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old flagged \ufeffthe end of his swimming career in an Instagram post in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I have been doing this every day for three years… there are only eight months left in my swimming journey," Simpson wrote, suggesting \ufeffhe will retire following the Olympic Games 2024<\/a> whether he makes the Dolphins team for Paris or not.<\/p>\n

But in an exclusive interview with Nine's Today<\/em> on Tuesday, Simpson walked back that statement.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI don't know. I have said and thought about that (retirement), but I don't think I'll know until I'm there," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'll have to see if I feel like I've fulfilled what I wanted to fulfil in the sport, whether I'm satisfied with my results.<\/p>\n

"And whether that's this year or a couple of years down the track I don't know, I can't say for sure.<\/p>\n

"I've never in my life not known what was sort of happening for me over the course of a year, so it's nice."<\/p>\n

After parking his music career to focus on full-time swimming Simpson missed selection for the Tokyo Games, held in 2021.<\/p>\n

But his performances at the Australian short course championships in September gave hope to his push for Paris, claiming gold medals in the \ufeff100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.<\/p>\n

The Dolphins turn their attention to the national swimming championships in April, and then the Olympic trials in June where athletes will compete for tickets to Paris.<\/p>\n

"We're in our final few months of hard work before we go and do Olympic trials. I'm pretty much not doing or thinking about anything else other than training, and then resting to train again," Simpson told Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"There's pressure but there's also excitement. For years it feels like it's so far away and all of a sudden it's under 100 days (to Paris 2024).<\/p>\n

"It comes around very quickly and you only have sort of one chance to do it, which is why swimming can be so cut-throat.<\/p>\n

"It's also what makes it kind of beautiful, and scary, and that's a great thing too.\ufeff"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
