Caroline Wilson<\/a>\ufeff has declared that Brayden Maynard's hit did in fact "prematurely" end Demon Angus Brayshaw<\/a>'s career, as calls to introduce a send-off rule in the AFL continue to gain momentum.<\/p>\n

But Kane Cornes disagrees the Maynard action would actually qualify even if a send-off was available to umpires during games.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Melbourne<\/a>'s Brayshaw was forced to medically retire after instructed to do so by doctors, due to excessive brain trauma sustained during his AFL career.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately Brayshaw's final involvement on the football field was the polarising incident with Maynard in September<\/a>, an action which has since been outlawed by the AFL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wilson believes Maynard's action should have resulted in a suspension, declaring that Melbourne is "filthy" that the Collingwood player went unpunished, while one of their superstar's career was cut short.<\/p>\n

"This would really devastate Brayden Maynard, but the sad fact is, that his actions \ufeffprematurely ended Angus Brayshaw's career," Wilson said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"The Melbourne Football Club was filthy at Brayden Maynard's hit on Angys Brayshaw.<\/p>\n

"Filthy at losing a pivotal player during a one-kick final\ufeff, filthy at Maynard's ill-judged private home visit and truly filthy at the AFL's handling of the subsequent tribunal process that saw Maynard get off."<\/p>\n

After Brayshaw's incident, the league made the decision to introduce more stringent concussion protocols, alongside tighter ruling around smothering and protection of players' heads for 2024 and beyond.<\/p>\n

The AFL made a change to the smother rule i\ufeffn response to the Pies premiership player's controversial bump on Melbourne midfielder Angus Brayshaw during the 2023 qualifying final.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the time, Maynard was cleared of any wrongdoing<\/a> and spared a season-ending suspension after an attempt to smother left Brayshaw unconscious during the Magpies' seven-point qualifying final victory.<\/p>\n

"(The incident) forced an uncomfortable AFL to change the (concussion) rules. Rules that would now see Brayden Maynard suspended and potentially miss a grand final\ufeff," Wilson said.<\/p>\n

Kane Cornes backed Wilson's support of the league's tougher rulings around Maynard's bump.<\/p>\n

It comes as Cornes continues to advocate for the AFL to introduce a send-off rule during matches.\ufeff<\/p>\n

However, when Wilson suggested Maynard could be sent off for his actions, Cornes shut down the likeliness that the Collingwood midfielder would be removed from the match despite his actions.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"The send-off rule is fine and I've been an advocate of that for a while now … but you can't send Brayden Maynard off for that. That is not a send-offable offence," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

Brayshaw played 167 games and kicked 47 goals for Melbourne.<\/p>\n
