Australia's captain Pat Cummins<\/a> has admitted he was clueless to the fact Alex Carey<\/a> was two runs away from a century as he hit the winning runs in Australia's second Test victory over New Zealand<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffCarey edged close to his second Test hundred with Australia needing seven runs to win in the 64th over with the wicket-keeper batter on 93 not out.<\/p>\n

Ben Sears' first delivery went to the boundary after a Carey pull shot before the 32-year-old claimed a single with the second ball.<\/p>\n

Cummins then hit the final delivery through cover point for four to seal victory but unfortunately rob Carey of a century.<\/p>\n

Post-game, Carey admitted to TVNZ+: "I\ufeff was happy with that, I didn't want to get on strike again."<\/p>\n

Speaking to ABC Radio as well, Carey added he was no certainty to get past the mark anyway.<\/p>\n

"(I was) pretty happy I didn't have to face another ball, I was pretty up and about at that stage and might have played a rash shot with the energy going the way it was", he said.<\/p>\n

Cummins revealed his plan was to reach the target "any way possible" but was unaware how close Carey was to a ton. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I had no idea he was on 98 so that would've been embarrassing if he was celebrating and I wasn't looking\ufeff," he told TVNZ+.<\/p>\n

The Aussie skipper added there were plenty of nerves in the Australian dressing room as the wickets fell throughout day four.<\/p>\n

Australia needed to reach 279 for the win, and required 202 more runs at the start of play.<\/p>\n

Travis Head fell early, putting Australia in disarray at 5-80.<\/p>\n

Mitch Marsh and Carey combined for a 140-run partnership before the all-rounder was on his way after a well made 80.<\/p>\n

One wicket became two when Mitchell Starc was out for a golden duck, leaving Australia in a precarious position at 7-220 but Cummins and Carey ultimately saved the day. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"It was pretty tense, \ufeffit was pretty nervous watching for the last couple of hours, everyone trying to keep themselves busy and then look up to the ball and look back down," he said.<\/p>\n
