Coach Warren Gatland \ufeffawkwardly walked away from his post-match interview with the BBC following Wales' painful 45-24 Six Nations<\/a> loss to France on Monday (AEDT).<\/p>\n

Gatland was annoyed at how long he was having to wait to speak with presenter \ufeffSonja McLaughlan, who was trying to buy some time.<\/p>\n

"We're just coming now. We're coming now," McLaughlan said, before Gatland appeared to respond with: "you say that all the time" and then walking off.<\/p>\n

Wales legend \ufeffSam Warburton – who played under Gatland – then apologised on the BBC coverage.<\/p>\n

"That's our fault, we talked for too long and Gats had enough! Sorry Gats."<\/p>\n

Gatland eventually returned to fulfil his requirements and McLaughlan offered more context on social media.<\/p>\n

Wales\ufeff – who thrashed Australia at last year's Rugby World Cup – are winless and last in the Six Nations with one game to play.<\/p>\n

The difference was the power and experience of France – particularly their bench – as they dominated the last 35 minutes and ground down Wales.<\/p>\n

The lead changed three times in an entertaining first half, and Wales regained it straight after halftime with a maiden try for centre Joe Roberts.<\/p>\n

Wales led 24-20 but never looked like scoring again.<\/p>\n

France replacements Georges-Henri Colombe, Romain Taofifenua and Maxime Lucu dotted down and Thomas Ramos kicked eight straight shots at goal until he narrowly missed his last.<\/p>\n

Notching five tries to three, France achieved their biggest score in Wales, surpassing 40 in 1996 in a non-championship game.<\/p>\n

Even more startling, Les Blues will welcome England in Lyon in the finale next weekend with a chance to finish second, a remarkable turnaround after the mediocre displays in the first three rounds.<\/p>\n

"It's true that we got our energy back," France coach Fabien Galthie said.<\/p>\n

"We had to work on our methods and get some freshness back, physically but also mentally. It's not over yet but I'd rather see the glass half full."<\/p>\n

Wales, after losing 11 of their last 12 Six Nations matches, will host Italy next Sunday (AEDT) hoping to avoid their first wooden spoon in 21 years.<\/p>\n

"Next week is a big game, it's massive for us," Gatland said.<\/p>\n

"We've got a young group of players, some of them aren't quite ready at this level, and have got to learn very quickly what Test match rugby is about."<\/p>\n

An under fire Galthie gave three debuts among eight changes after the embarrassment of drawing with Italy in Lille two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

France, especially in the first half, looked like a team that had just met each other as gaps were left open that Wales too easily exposed.<\/p>\n

But newcomers Emmanuel Meafou and young backs Nicolas Depoortere and Leo Barre looked like they belonged.<\/p>\n

Also key were the returns from injuries of captain Gregory Alldritt, lock Thibaud Flament and winger Louis Bielle-Biarrey and a first tTest start for halfback Nolann Le Garrec.<\/p>\n

His quick service from rucks, clever chips and decision making earned him the player of the match award.<\/p>\n

Barre being out of position was exploited for Wales' first try to winger Rio Dyer.<\/p>\n

But France counterattacked a Wales exit kick that didn't find touch, and centre Gael Fickou scored.<\/p>\n

Moments later, Wales had the lead back after halfback Tomos Williams exposed more poor defence.<\/p>\n

Then France went back in front after Le Garrec scored off a five metre scrum.<\/p>\n

To complete a madcap 11 minutes, a 40m Le Garrec reverse pass across field launched a counterattack that almost netted a try for Bielle-Biarrey.<\/p>\n

France led 20-17 at halftime, and lost it within three minutes after a break by composed five-eighth Sam Costelow set up the Roberts try.<\/p>\n

Costelow converted to be four from four kicking at the posts.<\/p>\n

But he and Williams were perhaps replaced too soon as France pinned Wales in their 22 for what seemed like the rest of the match.<\/p>\n

France sent in a new front row, including its fourth debutant in Colombe, and Taofifenua for Meafou.<\/p>\n

The fresh power was apparent as Wales barely held out.<\/p>\n

Three times in 10 minutes spanning halftime, France was stymied by forward passes.<\/p>\n

Alldritt was denied a try after knocking on as he plunged over the line.<\/p>\n

Winger Damian Penaud, barely noticed in this championship, was suddenly unleashing long breaks down the right sideline and causing chaos.<\/p>\n

One of those Penaud breaks, with a great pickup by Le Garrec, finished with Colombe's try on debut to put France back in front in the 65th minute.<\/p>\n

When the 203cm Taofifenua scored from his own charge down of halfback Gareth Davies, France finally broke Wales and had the bonus fourth try.<\/p>\n

A Colombe jackal gave Ramos his fourth penalty kick for a 40-24 lead, and they completed a muscle bound display with a Lucu try from a five metre scrum after Penaud offloaded while drawing four defenders.<\/p>\n

"We were a bit frustrated with that Italy game," Alldritt said.<\/p>\n
