F1 Academy, Formula 1<\/a>'s female-only championship, opened its season in Saudi Arabia at the weekend with the curtain raiser, not without controversy.<\/p>\n

After dominating the weekend's programme, \ufeffPrema Racing driver Doriane Pin had a race win taken away after neglecting the chequered flag.<\/p>\n

In her series debut, Pin comfortably clinched line honours in practice, both qualifying sessions and both races at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit but was sensationally stripped of her second victory post-race.<\/p>\n

At the end of race two, the Frenchwoman failed to notice \ufeffthe chequered flag being waved \u2014 signalling the end of the 13-lap race \u2014 continuing at full speed for the cool-down lap.<\/p>\n

After crossing the finish line a second time at full tilt, \ufeffrace officials were forced to show Pin red flags to draw her attention.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Pin later explained that she did not see the chequered flag and was not informed of the race's completion over the team radio.<\/p>\n

The Mercedes junior said she had an issue with her radio and missed the message from her race engineer, who said: "Doriane, what are you doing? It's the chequered flag."<\/p>\n

For her behaviour, Pin was given a drive-through penalty which was converted to a 20-second time penalty.<\/p>\n

The penalty caused \ufeffPin to drop to ninth place post-race. This elevated Alpine junior Abbi Pulling to first and brought Campos Racing driver Nerea Marti onto the bottom step of the podium.<\/p>\n

In a social media post, Pin, who leads the series standing despite the sanction, vowed to bounce back.<\/p>\n

"An unfortunate end to an incredible first weekend in F1 Academy, the team and the car were amazing, but a post-race penalty drops me to P9," she said on X on Sunday.<\/p>\n

"Will come back even stronger in Miami. Congrats to @abbipulling on P1."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Viewers were left confused by the decision to penalise Pin for something so minor, however \ufeffleading F1 journalist Will Buxton explained that race officials were left with no choice.<\/p>\n

"Some extreme reactions to this but it's really not so easy to wave off the infraction," Buxton wrote on X.<\/p>\n

"Regardless of mitigating circumstances, continuing at full race speed and crossing the line twice when circuit staff, marshals and vehicles are likely to be on track really is a very big deal."<\/p>\n
