Australian rowing<\/a> pair Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre have turned to a biomechanical expert on the other side of the world as they fight back from a gut-wrenching defeat in pursuit of Olympic<\/a> gold.<\/p>\n

Morrison and McIntyre took to the 2023 World Rowing Championships as hot favourites in the women's pair event, having triumphed in every one of their European races that season, including the second and third World Cup regattas.<\/p>\n

But over 2000 metres in the Serbian capital of Belgrade in September,\ufeff Dutch pair Ymkje Clevering and Veronique Meester trumped the Australian duo, denying them world championship glory.<\/p>\n

Searching for answers less than 12 months out from the Paris Olympics<\/a>, Morrison and McIntyre linked up with a Swiss biomechanist late last year.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe've dug pretty deep into the biomechanics of rowing … so that's basically looking at force, angles that we row, power we produce, foot-plate force when we're in the boat and looking at how we can optimise speed," Morrison told Wide World of Sports at the women's National Training Centre in Penrith.<\/p>\n

"What the coach sees is a little bit different to what's actually going on in the boat, so we're trying to dig a bit deeper into the details.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe put in the boat a logger that captures data, we do a training session, we turn it off, we download the data and we send it to her over there. She'll analyse it and put it in reports and then we have video sessions with her and she'll go through what her findings are and recommendations.<\/p>\n

"She has a pretty good idea of what 'good' looks like and how we compare."<\/p>\n

McIntyre says working with a biomechanical expert is about "leaving no stone unturned" in their quest for Olympic gold.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffWe've done a lot of work with a biomechanist, looking at application of power and timing, not just through the coach's eye but through proper physical data," McIntyre told Wide World of Sports in Penrith.<\/p>\n

Morrison and McIntyre were locked in this month as the Australian women's pair for the Paris Games.<\/p>\n

Gold in Paris would mark an incredible turnaround from the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where they failed to reach the A final in the pair event and finished seventh overall.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThey were part of the women's four that won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, along with Lucy Stephan and Rosemary Popa, but failed to fire in the pair event.<\/p>\n

McIntyre sees a silver lining in the result of the 2023 world titles.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt was definitely a huge disappointment for us, but it definitely highlighted a few things that we needed to review and work on," said McIntyre, a 27-year-old from Perth.<\/p>\n

"To be honest, it probably was a really good outcome for us so that this year we're not underprepared for a race like that.<\/p>\n

"I definitely don't stew on it anymore; that's what those first few weeks in September and October were about … The memory's there, but it's not something we worry about."<\/p>\n

Morrison, 31, hails from Melbourne.<\/p>\n

She competed in the\ufeff women's eight event at the Rio 2016 Olympics but then gave up the sport, before returning during the 2018-19 summer and pairing up with McIntyre.<\/p>\n

"We've got something pretty special going," Morrison said.<\/p>\n

"And to have the chance to see what we can do with 100 per cent focus on the pair, it's exciting."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
