Kane Cornes<\/a> has blasted\ufeff Carlton<\/a> players and fans' "premature" comments in support of under-fire forward Harry McKay, who kicked the winning goal for the Blues to hand them a one-point win over Brisbane<\/a> on Friday night.<\/p>\n

McKay slotted a goal with just over a minute left to play to hand Carlton a riveting Opening Round win, after the Blues at one stage trailed by a whopping 46 points.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old has been scrutinised for his wayward goalkicking since his 2021 Coleman medal win<\/a>, but was able to silence doubters at the Gabba with three majors to his name.\ufeff<\/p>\n

McKay's teammates, forward partner Charlie Curnow and defender Nic Newman, rushed to his defence after his winning goal on Friday night.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Pretty bloody proud of him, finally\ufeff," Curnow said on Fox Footy.<\/p>\n

\"Harry<\/p>\n

"That can put the media to sleep a little bit, well done, H\ufeff."<\/p>\n

"I'm looking forward to the commentary about him this week," Newman added on 3AW Radio.<\/p>\n

"Bloody proud of H, he cops it pretty unfairly at times. He's been in great form and works as hard as anyone I've ever seen."<\/p>\n

The commentary surrounding McKay's heroics have irked Cornes, who has called on Blues players and fans to pull back on lauding the forward for simply doing his job.<\/p>\n

"You are a player that Carlton has nearly invested nearly a million dollars in for seven seasons. That is what you do (kick goals)," Cornes said on Nine's Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Yes it was a big moment, it was a clutch moment and it was an outstanding start to the season. That is what he is expected to deliver.<\/p>\n

"This shouldn't be an out-of-the-box moment, that this is some outstanding game. That is the expectation."<\/p>\n

Cornes, who was part of Port Adelaide's 2004 premiership side, declared that \ufeffwhile McKay's winning major was an unforgettable moment, this should be his minimum standard going forward.<\/p>\n

He hopes that the young forward can mirror his game off some of the greats in order to elongate his career, including three-time Geelong premiership forward Tom Hawkins.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You're not going to kick the winning goal every week, but that performance should be consistently what he's able to produce for the year," he said.<\/p>\n

"That's what Tom Hawkins has done for 16 years. That's what Jeremy Cameron does, that's what Toby Greene does."<\/p>\n

Most importantly, Cornes believes Blues fans can eventually celebrate McKay, if he is to continue a strong run of goalkicking.<\/p>\n

Until then, he has urged fans and teammates to simply keep a lid on it.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Let's not give him the flowers and celebrate what an amazing game it was – which it was – that should be the expectation that he performs," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

"It's a premature reaction to one game."\ufeff<\/p>\n
