Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> has revealed he would one day "love to" race in the Indianapolis 500<\/a> in a move inspired by Scott McLaughlin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three-time Bathurst 1000<\/a> winner ditched Supercars<\/a> at the end of last year to pursue a career in the United States competing in NASCAR<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Before van Gisbergen, former adversary McLaughlin made the move Stateside to compete in the IndyCar Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

McLaughlin has enjoyed success in the single-seater series, despite having no previous open-wheel racing experience.<\/p>\n

After three full seasons, McLaughlin has four race wins and finished third in the 2023 championship.<\/p>\n

Before the pair left Supercars, they were two of the top title contenders and were often at loggerheads.<\/p>\n

"We're friends again now that we're not trying to beat each other every weekend," said van Gisbergen on Kevin Harvick's Happy Hour<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

"We had an awesome time. I think it was 2017 to 2020, we had some great races and he ended up winning three championships. He was awesome, like a really, really good racer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'd love to try the Indy cars and try the Indy 500 eventually, but what he's done and how he's come over \u2013 and I think it's his third season he's about to start \u2013 he's going really well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's cool to follow his progress."<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen said McLaughlin has been one of his biggest allies since coming to the United States.<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen's debut in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he won on the streets of Chicago, set the wheels in motion for him to go full-time in the second-tier Xfinity Series.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old will also contest at least eight Cup Series races this year with a view towards going full-time in 2025.<\/p>\n

While van Gisbergen has half an eye on IndyCar, he reckons McLaughlin might be tempted to try NASCAR too.<\/p>\n

"When I did the race here, Chicago last year, he (McLaughlin) was one of the most excited guys blowing up my phone asking me about it all, how was it," said van Gisbergen.<\/p>\n

\"Shane<\/p>\n

"With that tie-in now with Penske and their NASCAR team, I think he's pretty tempted to try it. It would be cool to see how he would go."<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his racing relationship with McLaughlin, van Gisbergen said his fight for the 2019 Bathurst 1000 is one of his fondest \u2013 despite finishing runner-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately, it was probably when I came second to him," said van Gisbergen.<\/p>\n

"Bathurst, 2019, we raced at the end and I was just really trying to be as close as I could to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The laps we were doing were just quali laps, so close to the wall, just flat out the whole time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Coming second sucked, but how on the limit we were pushing, it was a pretty cool feeling.\u00a0<\/p>\n
