Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> has come under fire for his response to a question about the turmoil surrounding Red Bull<\/a> team principal Christian Horner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Horner was last week cleared of any wrongdoing following an independent investigation<\/a> instigated by the Red Bull GMBh parent company.<\/p>\n

During a practice session ahead of last weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, a dossier of screenshots and images was emailed<\/a> to 150 people within the F1 paddock, including journalists, team principals and chief executives, as well as senior figures within the FIA and Formula 1.<\/a><\/p>\n

Then on Friday morning (AEDT), International Women's Day, the saga took a fresh twist when it emerged the woman at the centre of the allegations had been suspended<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo has now found himself in the middle of the criticism for appearing to dismiss the allegations of sexual harassment as "noise and distraction".<\/p>\n

Ricciardo drove for the Red Bull team under Horner for five years between 2014-2018, and is in the box seat to return to the team next season \u2013 if not earlier \u2013 should Sergio Perez fail to fire.<\/p>\n

Ahead of practice for this weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the 34-year-old was asked by a Belgian reporter if he thought "dirty" things could destabilise the Red Bull team, but didn't directly reference Horner.<\/p>\n

"You always want things to be smoother than they are, of course," Ricciardo began.<\/p>\n

"Right now there is a lot of noise and distractions, there's no doubt. The way [Red Bull] performed last week \u2026 for them to be able to still focus on business on track, that is a big strength of theirs.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully these things start to slowly go away, and they can just focus on being a race team.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"But of course, for the drivers as well it's not always easy, but I think they did a good job in handling this."<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, he flashed a smile while giving the answer.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Reaction online was swift with many calling Ricciardo out for failing to condemn his former team boss, while others suggested even a simple 'no comment' would have been better.<\/p>\n

Matt Bishop, who was a former head of PR for both Aston Martin and McLaren, shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, an old clip of Ricciardo stumbling over a question about Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

Bishop went on to say giving answers like this would only damage his reputation.<\/p>\n

"He's done this before \u2026 I think his problem is he isn't interested in media work, so he doesn't pay much heed to media advisors," Bishop said.<\/p>\n

"But he should do, because ignoring them damages him reputationally."<\/p>\n

The Horner investigation has dominated coverage of the sport for much of the past month, and largely overshadowed the first race of the season, which was dominated by Red Bull and Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo ended the second practice session for Sunday morning's (AEDT) Saudi Arabian Grand Prix a lowly 19th, nearly half a second slower than teammate Yuki Tsunoda.<\/p>\n
