A\ufeffndrew Johns<\/a> has taken aim at the Knights<\/a> for their "terrible defence" during a shock 28-12 opening-round loss to the Raiders<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite entering the clash as red-hot favourites, Newcastle came up with a number of disappointing errors and missed tackles in front of their diehard home fans.<\/p>\n

The hosts came up with 13 errors and conceded six penalties against Canberra, as well as missing 30 tackles in a surprisingly poor first-up display.<\/p>\n

With plenty of expectation on their shoulders given the way they finished last season, the Knights were off the pace and one moment left club great Johns furious.<\/p>\n

Danny Levi – a man who spent some of his early career in the Hunter – dived through some lazy defenders close to the line at a crucial moment in the contest.<\/p>\n

"Geez that is terrible defence and ruck play," Johns said on the Nine broadcast.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe rugby league Immortal was equally displeased with Newcastle's work with ball in hand, calling out one of the playmakers to stand up during the second-half and "take control" during a "horrible" attacking raid. <\/p>\n

"I don't think they built the game well in the first half-hour," he said post-game on Nine.<\/p>\n

"I think they turned up thinking all they had to do was finesse their way to victory without doing the hard work. <\/p>\n

"People talking about changes – they need to take a deep breath. Jackson Hastings and Tyson Gamble deserve to be there based on what happened last year."<\/p>\n

Newcastle had a one-man advantage for 10 minutes in the opening half, but allowed Zac Hosking to cross for a try before bouncing back through Tyson Frizell.<\/p>\n

After the break it was all Canberra however, with Levi's four-pointer backed up by tries for Jordan Rapana and Xavier Savage.<\/p>\n

The assessment from Johns was \ufeffechoed post-game by halfback Jackson Hastings<\/a>, who urged his teammates to look in the mirror heading into next weekend.<\/p>\n

"Tough way to start the season – we were probably our own worst enemy," he told Nine.<\/p>\n

"They won little moments on last tackle and we just weren't disciplined enough. It's not good enough in front of our home fans \u2026 we let them down a little bit tonight.<\/p>\n

"It's not one person, it's a team thing and we all contributed to the errors.<\/p>\n

"We need to have a look at each other."<\/p>\n
