Champion Essendon forward Matthew Lloyd and reporter Damien Barrett have called for the AFL to come down hard on polarising North Melbourne<\/a> coach Alastair Clarkson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As revealed by 9News on Monday, Clarkson verbally attacked a number of St Kilda players<\/a> in the aftermath of Jimmy Webster levelling Kangaroos captain Jye Simpkin \ufeffduring a practice game<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Webster was slapped with a seven-week ban for his high shot, but it is Clarkson who stole the headlines for allegedly using the word "c—sucker" while lambasting Webster – as well as Saints teammate Dougal Howard – during the break after the incident.<\/p>\n

Barrett questioned whether the game has gone past Clarkson, who has been in the spotlight before for similar behaviour during his days coaching Hawthorn.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's a nearly-56-year-old who has had a history of such matters," Barrett said on Nine's Footy Classified<\/em> on Monday night.<\/p>\n

"He constantly apologises and moves on and causes carnage behind him.<\/p>\n

Lloyd backed Barrett's call, after standing firm on offering Clarkson a suspension earlier in the week<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's got to be more than just a fine in my opinion. He can't help himself," Lloyd said.<\/p>\n

"One of his greatest strengths is his passion and his loyalty for his players, but it's also a weakness how emotional he gets\ufeff, how violent and angry he can get in certain situations."<\/p>\n

The punishment, if Clarkson is to receive one, currently stands at $25,000 and a two-week suspension\ufeff, according to Eddie McGuire.<\/p>\n

Barrett also called on prominent North Melbourne figures to stop protecting Clarkson, who is also still involved in an investigation into a racism scandal at former club Hawthorn<\/a>.\ufeff Clarkson denies any wrongdoing in relation to that matter.<\/p>\n

\ufeff<\/strong><\/em>"Sonja Hood and other people of the board, they've covered for him in the time he's been at North Melbourne," Barrett said.<\/p>\n
