A\ufeffndrew Johns<\/a> has applauded the Knights<\/a> for snubbing a player he credits for turning the momentum in last year's grand final thriller.<\/p>\n

Jack Cogger played a key role in Penrith<\/a> overcoming a 16-point deficit to beat the Broncos<\/a> in last year's premiership decider, linking with Nathan Cleary in the halves as the epic comeback was launched.<\/p>\n

While Cleary, a consensus pick for the number one player in the game<\/a>, has earned almost all the accolades for that epic comeback, it was Cogger's role off the bench that allowed the champion No.7 to work his magic.<\/p>\n

Johns says that Cleary performance was "the best 19 minutes of a grand final I can remember" but \ufeffreckons Cogger deserves credit, too.<\/p>\n

\"Jack<\/p>\n

"You know what hasn't been talked about much? Jack Cogger went on and played first receiver, Nathan played five-eighth," Johns told Wide World of Sports' Freddy and the Eighth<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"But Cogger actually got into first receiver and said 'I'm going to do this'.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Cogger has since left Penrith and moved up the highway to Newcastle.<\/p>\n

He will make his Knights debut off the bench in Thursday's clash with Canberra at Hunter Stadium.<\/p>\n

While many were calling for his inclusion in the starting halves, Johns was rapt to see coach Adam O'Brien hand the honours to the club's incumbents, Jackson Hastings and Tyson Gamble.<\/p>\n

That pair led the Knights on a whirlwind run to last year's finals and Newcastle fans are hoping that momentum continues into 2024.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I've got to applaud the Knights," Johns said.<\/p>\n

"(There was) a lot of talk about Cogger starting, and I've got to applaud Adam O'Brien starting with Jackson Hastings and Tyson Gamble.<\/p>\n

"They deserve the first shot (for) what they did last year late in the season.<\/p>\n

"The best thing about the Knights at the moment… you've got competition for spots. Exciting times.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

The Knights and Raiders played out a thriller in the first week of last year's finals series, which the Novocastrians won by two points.<\/p>\n
