New Zealand's deputy prime minister Winton Peters has unleashed a scathing attack on the Wellington-based Super Rugby Aupiki team for its "redneck" haka.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes Poua performance before round one of the New Zealand women's Super Rugby<\/a> competition against Chiefs Manawa took aim at the government.<\/p>\n

The haka contained a passage calling out "karetao o te K\u0101wana kakiwhero" which translates to "puppets of this redneck government".<\/p>\n

The revised haka was composed by Hinewai Pomare after players reportedly reached out to her, adding the controversial segment to the original piece by Te Wehi Wright.<\/p>\n

The addition comes less than six months after a new coalition government was formed between National, New Zealand First, and ACT.<\/p>\n

The new government has reversed some of the work done by the previous Labour government, including prioritising English names over te reo M\u0101ori in government sectors.<\/p>\n

"(They) were feeling the frustration of the current political environment and were looking for some words to really reflect that sentiment and add a bit of spice to the existing haka," said Pomare.<\/p>\n

She added, "We currently have elected officials resourced by right-wing interests who urge the presence of white supremacy.<\/p>\n

"You see that, even in the week that's just been and recent weeks. Repealing of the Smokefree law, the disestablishment of Te Aka Whai Ora (M\u0101ori health authority), multiple pieces of legislation that reflect that this is a group of people who are not for the people."<\/p>\n

Hurricanes Poua prop and haka leader Leilani Perese said she was proud of the haka.<\/p>\n

"This is very spicy, and we like it like that. This is exactly what we want to say," she said.<\/p>\n

"I felt very empowered, very excited, for this new addition into our haka."<\/p>\n

"I sent it to management at the last minute. They were like 'go for it. We back you 100 per cent'."<\/p>\n

Now, it seems whatever support Perese had has been walked back.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hurricanes CEO Avan Lee said he was not aware of the team's plan and it's expected the team will formally apologise for the performance.<\/p>\n

It's expected the Hurricanes Poua will not perform the same version of the haka again at the request of team management.<\/p>\n

"I've made it very clear to management, team management, that we are not supportive of the words used," he told Radio New Zealand.<\/p>\n

"These are obviously somewhat controversial words that have been used, there's been no discussion or consultation outside of the team so you know, it's not our place to make a political statement whether they are positive about the government or negative about the government."<\/p>\n

Winston Peters, the acting prime minister in Christopher Luxon's absence from the country, took to social media where he gave the Poua a whack.<\/p>\n

He made light of the team's 46-24 loss to the Chiefs.<\/p>\n

"Perhaps if they focussed more on tackling and catching the ball instead of expending all their energy performing a haka trying too hard to attack the government they may not have been thrashed so badly," Peters wrote.<\/p>\n

"I don't see the world number one Black Ferns doing that."<\/p>\n

Sports and Recreation Minister Chris Bishop also weighed in.<\/p>\n

"Obviously I disagree, New Zealanders will make their own judgments, as will Wellington fans of the Hurricanes," Bishop said.<\/p>\n

"Clearly I disagree with them, we're not a government of white supremacy, that's ridiculous."<\/p>\n

New Zealand Rugby has announced it has launched an investigation.<\/p>\n

"New Zealand Rugby respects the right of our professional players to express their personal views on a range of issues," a statement read.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"However, we also expect our players to do so in a respectful and inclusive way, especially when they are in their professional environments."<\/p>\n

Rugby New Zealand is set to meet with the Hurricanes on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
