L\ufeffegendary AFL<\/a> coach Mick Malthouse<\/a> is warming to the idea of a sin-bin or send-off in the wake of Jimmy Webster's seven-game ban<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The St Kilda player fronted the tribunal on Tuesday after leaping off the ground and collecting North Melbourne skipper \ufeffJy Simpkin in the head during a pre-season game.<\/p>\n

The league is cracking down on any high contact – and specifically when the offender jumps off the ground – \ufefffollowing Brayden Maynard's hit on Angus Brayshaw in last year's finals series.<\/p>\n

Brayshaw was forced into an early retirement last month<\/a> as the result of brain health concerns stemming from a number of concussions.<\/p>\n

Australian football in general is grappling with increasing numbers of former players discovering long-lasting brain health effects\ufeff, and pressure is on the AFL to limit the problem at its source.<\/p>\n

And while lengthy suspensions like Webster's will go some way to reducing high contact, \ufeffmany are calling for in-game punishments to become much harsher.<\/p>\n

While some lower levels of Australian football utilise a penalty card system similar to football (soccer), the top professional league has no avenue to send an offending player from the field during a game for any indiscretion.<\/p>\n

Rugby league has a 10-minute sin bin for professional fouls, and a send off for more serious \ufeffoffences.<\/p>\n

"I've always been against players being sent off because we don't know whether they got it right or wrong," three-time premiership coach Malthouse told Nine's Today <\/em>on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

"But I think we're at the stage now… you stop the play, you have a look, you say 'yes, that's instant dismissal, you're off the ground'.<\/p>\n

"I'm thinking it's going to be a rarity, and when you've got rarity there is probably position there for a send-off.<\/p>\n

"If it's common then you've got to say why is it happening so often."<\/p>\n

Contact sports around the world have been moving to reduce concussion and head injuries for a number of years now.<\/p>\n

The AFL has clamped down on high contact between players through a number of rule changes in recent seasons.<\/p>\n

Malthouse believes attitudes and approaches are changing for the better.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I notice the way players attack the ball… there is that little hesitancy now around the ball when it's just free, when someone has got his head over the ball there is a little bit of back-off, and I think it's a good thing," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's going to protect the player, we know what the ramifications are later on in life and the players are now very much aware of that.<\/p>\n

"That's why (Webster's hit on Simpkin) was such a surprise – his teammates would be really questioning it.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I wonder what the St Kilda players will be like – they may have gone in to defend him, but they would be saying 'why did it happen? Why did it need to happen?', because it was unnecessary.<\/p>\n
