After leading the way in 2023, most would have the Brumbies<\/a> as the top team out of Australia to challenge for the Super Rugby Pacific<\/a> title in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, the Reds<\/a> and Waratahs<\/a> could arguably lay claim to that tag after the Brumbies were soundly defeated by the Chiefs<\/a> in Super Round.<\/p>\n

Last year's bridesmaids were 46-12 winners in a dominant display<\/a> for their second straight win of the season after beating the Crusaders a week earlier.<\/p>\n

The Brumbies, meanwhile, are one from two after their first-round 30-3 drubbing of the Rebels.<\/p>\n

The men from the ACT conceded six tries and scored just two of their own.<\/p>\n

Former Wallabies centre Morgan Turinui lashed the Brumbies but offered a glimmer of hope ahead of their third-round match-up against the Western Force in Canberra.<\/p>\n

"(That was) one of the poorest performances I've seen from the Brumbies," Turinui said on Stan Sport's Between Two Posts.<\/p>\n

"But the great thing about them is they won't throw the baby out with the bath water. They know what works for them.<\/p>\n

"James Slipper called it a bit of a wake-up call \u2014 they'll go back to work, they know what works for them, good D, good set piece, good occupation of territory, and great breakdown.<\/p>\n

"They'll be back."<\/p>\n

Former Crusaders and Highlanders utility Joe Wheeler echoed Turinui's sentiment, labelling the performance out of character.<\/p>\n

"I was really disappointed in the Brumbies," said Wheeler.<\/p>\n

"Before the weekend, I thought if there was any sniff I thought the Brumbies might be able to do it. Where they normally are so strong is their set-piece. It faltered. It wasn't as efficient or precise as what we're used to.<\/p>\n

"They looked a little bit rudderless in terms of their game. They lacked imagination in their attack and when they weren't getting any go-forward ball, it was like 'Where do we go to?' and they were aimless in their kicking game, which is so un-Brumbies-like.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You don't describe the Brumbies in that way. Normally their structures are so sound. They're really accurate in all they do. A really disappointing performance and I reiterate what you said, it'd be the worst performance I've seen from a Brumbies side."<\/p>\n

Both Wheeler and Turinui tipped the Chiefs and Blues as the firm favourites for this year's title.<\/p>\n
