A\ufeffndrew Johns<\/a> has issued a challenge to Cameron Munster<\/a>, urging the Storm<\/a> superstar to 'lift' after a uncharacteristically down 2023 season.<\/p>\n

The star five-eighth failed to lift Melbourne into an NRL<\/a> decider last season and was ranked in sixth spot in Wide World Of Sports' Top 50 countdown<\/a> heading into this year. Johns has previously described Munster as the best player in the game, so was surprised to see him dip in 2023.<\/p>\n

Munster remains one of the game's elite game-breakers and fantastic characters, but will need to be at his very best if the Storm are to win a fifth NRL title.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the latest edition of Wide World Of Sports' Freddy and The Eighth<\/em><\/a>, the rugby league Immortal threw down the gauntlet when asked about Munster's performances and his importance to his club on the field.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Yep, for sure [he needs to improve]," Johns said.<\/p>\n

"I read in the off-season that he said 'I lost my confidence' and for him to say that – he definitely needs to.<\/p>\n

"Munster will lift, he won't play poorly – not that he played poorly, but he just wasn't a consistent superstar."<\/p>\n

Last season, Munster scored eight tries and registered 15 try assists for the Storm – slightly down on his previous effort – but remained a key member of Melbourne's top-four finish and Queensland's series win at the State of Origin level.<\/p>\n

Looking across the entire Top 50 list (click on the gallery below to see the full top 50<\/strong>), there were some major surprises – and one of those was the amount of forwards included near the very top.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"There was actually quite a few people that did it," Brad Fittler said, referring to the 10 judges who determined Nine's NRL top 50. The judging panel included both Johns and Fittler.<\/p>\n

"When I actually read over it, it was good because you've got so many other opinions and I thought it had more balance than my own individual top 50.<\/p>\n

"I like the fact that there's three middle people in the top 10 – very rarely would you ever get that. Normally, it would all be halves, fullbacks or five-eighths."<\/p>\n

Johns and Fittler both agreed that \ufeffthe likes of Ezra Mam, Tom Flegler and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow could force their way into the upper-echelon this season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
