Port Adelaide<\/a> great Kane Cornes<\/a> has taken aim at Essendon<\/a> for extending the contract of key defender Jordan Ridley.<\/p>\n

Ridley, 25, was already signed until the end of 2026 but inked a three-year extension to tie him to the Bombers until the end of 2029.<\/p>\n

Cornes has been outspoken and critical previously of clubs handing out long deals to players.<\/p>\n

In recent times Melbourne's Angus Brayshaw was forced to retire with years remaining on his contract, while Melbourne's seven-year Clayton Oliver contract looks shaky after a tumultuous off-season for the midfielder.<\/p>\n

\ufeffCornes took to X on Wednesday night to label the Ridley deal "out of control" and then doubled down when speaking to SEN radio.<\/p>\n

"I've read the most ridiculous press release from the Bombers\u2026 the headline is 'Ridley a Don until 2029'," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

"He had three years to go on a contract and some bright spark at Essendon is going, 'Hang on, three is not enough, let's extend him for three more'.<\/p>\n

"He's not a star of the competition… they had him signed for three more years.<\/p>\n

"In a week where Angus Brayshaw is going to be paid out five years of a contract, one year into it… We've seen Clayton Oliver go off the rails.<\/p>\n

"I'm not suggesting Jordan Ridley is going to go off the rails in that way, but he did rip his quad pretty badly and missed the last five or six games of last season.<\/p>\n

"He's 25 and he's not a star of the competition. He's not someone you need to sign up for three extra years after you've already got three.<\/p>\n

"What are we doing with contracts? I don't understand. Would you not assess it in two more seasons and then see where he's at?"<\/p>\n

The Cornes comments came before North Melbourne announced a long extension for 19-year-old Harry Sheezel<\/a>, which ties him to the Kangaroos until the end of 2030.<\/p>\n

Sheezel's is now the fourth longest current contract in the AFL, behind only Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton, Port Adelaide skipper Connor Rozee, and Sydney's Nick Blakey\ufeff.\ufeff<\/p>\n
