Motorsport's love affair with hybrid power might be over after a landmark announcement from the sport's governing body.<\/p>\n

The FIA World Rally Championship will axe the controversial hybrid units it introduced just two years ago.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the FIA confirmed new rules and regulations had been ratified by the World Motor Sport Council that will see hybrid units from the top-flight Rally1 cars removed.<\/p>\n

It's the first time a world championship has wound back on electrification.<\/p>\n

The removal of hybrid units is part of a raft of regulation changes to the WRC over the next two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To compensate for the loss in performance of the hybrid units, the overall weight of cars will be reduced. Air restrictors will also be reduced and aerodynamics changed accordingly.<\/p>\n

Come 2026, new Rally1 regulations will be introduced that will run concurrently with the current set-up in a bid to reduce costs.<\/p>\n

With a focus on reducing costs, a single supply safety cell will be offered, which manufacturers can develop their own bodywork upon.<\/p>\n

Engines and transmissions will be cost-capped and technology limited.<\/p>\n

The cost of cars will be capped at $667,500 (\u20ac400,000) and crucially manufacturers will be required to make their cars available for sale directly from the finish of a WRC event.<\/p>\n

While hybrid power \u2013 which uses an electric motor and an internal combustion engine \u2013 will be dropped, the FIA is intent on introducing an all-electric series at the earliest opportunity.<\/p>\n

"The WMSC members carefully considered the recommendations of the WRC Working Group and were united in their support of the series of objectives that have been established," said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.<\/p>\n

"To be at the point where the WRC Commission can now work on finalising proposals that will go a long way towards cementing the WRC's future course, once approved by the WMSC, is a significant moment for the championship, its stakeholders and the rallying community in general.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's also important to note that the results of the WRC fan engagement survey will be carefully considered by the WRC Commission during the process of drafting the final proposals. Hybrid power has progressively become more prominent in top-flight motorsport, albeit not without its challenges.<\/p>\n

Formula 1 introduced hybrid power in 2014 along with V6 turbocharged engines, causing bemusement among fans.<\/p>\n

The FIA World Endurance Championship has long embraced hybrid power. However, it has also grappled with high costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a bid to encourage participation, two sets of regulations were introduced with LMH for bespoke prototypes and LMDh for prototypes with common chassis and hybrid unit supply.<\/p>\n
