Oscar Valdez has claimed the WBC super featherweight title with a contender for knockout of the year after his opponent Miguel Berchelt was left helpless on the canvas.<\/p>\n

Valdez, who previously held the WBO featherweight belt from 2016 to 2019, improved his overall record to 29-0 (23 KOs), with his win at the MGM Grand Conference Center.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old entered the bout as the underdog but quickly emerged as the better of the two, who scored an early knockdown in the fourth round before finishing Berchelt with a nasty left hook at the end of the 10th round.<\/p>\n

The three judges scored the fight well and truly in his favour: 89-80, 88-81, 87-82.<\/p>\n

Berchelt now relinquishes the super featherweight title, one which he had owned since 2017 when he knocked out Francisco Vargas.<\/p>\n

"There's nothing better in life than proving people wrong," Valdez said after the fight.<\/p>\n

"I have a list of people who doubted me. My idols doubted me. Boxing analysts doubted me. They said Berchelt was going to knock me out.<\/p>\n

"I have a message to everybody: Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't do."<\/p>\n

Valdez' big knockout sent shockwaves through the boxing world, with fighters and pundits stunned by the underdog's big win.<\/p>\n
