M\ufeffuch of the talk following Penrith's defeat to Wigan in the World Club Challenge on Sunday morning (AEDT)<\/a> revolves around a contentious Warriors<\/a> try.<\/p>\n

The Warriors beat the Panthers<\/a> 16-12 to secure a record-equalling fifth World Club Challenge<\/a> title, but the hosts were assisted by a dubious try awarded to Jake Wardle in the 53rd minute.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Wigan centre pounced on a grubber deep in Penrith territory and was met by Brian To'o and Dylan Edwards, who in the eyes of an overwhelming majority stopped Wardle well short of the try line.<\/p>\n

But\ufeff the on-field referee deemed it a try and the official upstairs said they had insufficient evidence to overturn the decision.<\/p>\n

"I can't see a definitive reposition of that ball back to the line," the video referee said.<\/p>\n

"I've got a live call of a try. I have insufficient evidence to overturn the live call. I'm happy with these angles I need. I've made my decision."<\/p>\n

The controversial \ufefftry gave Wigan a 14-12 lead, before a Harry Smith conversion made the scoreline 16-12.<\/p>\n

Rugby league guru Phil Gould\ufeff was astounded.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffHe's a long way short of the line there," Gould said on the Nine broadcast.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYou could build a block of units between the ball and the line. He hasn't got anywhere near the line … He's a fibber."<\/p>\n

Former NRL<\/a> star Jamie Soward unloaded on social media, labelling it "absolutely rubbish".<\/p>\n

\ufeffIn another post, the former Dragons and Panthers playmaker wrote: "This is comical. Why if we are the elite league do we not have our ref over there?".<\/p>\n

\"Panthers<\/p>\n

Another NRL star, former Panthers and Rabbitohs winger Josh Mansour, also hit out.<\/p>\n

"Bias [sic] refereeing," Mansour wrote.<\/p>\n

"How does the ref award try with the angle and look from the last Wigan try and in similar circumstances award no try on Taylan [May's] effort [on the full-time siren]?"<\/p>\n

NRL great Braith Anasta also whacked the decision.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't know how he [the on-field referee] could award that a try or go up with a try," Anasta said on the Fox League coverage.<\/p>\n

"He wasn't in a good position. He couldn't see the ball go down on the ground. That's a no try."<\/p>\n

Rugby league legend James Graham said on the Fox League broadcast that the on-field referee had "made an assumption", before adding:\ufeff "I don't know how the ball gets to the try line".<\/p>\n
