Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> says he did the "right thing" leaving Supercars<\/a> to pursue a career in NASCAR<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This year marks his first full campaign in the second-tier NASCAR Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing after 15 years of competing in Supercars.<\/p>\n

The Kiwi will contest a handful of NASCAR Cup Series races with Trackhouse Racing and it's expected he'll graduate to the top tier full-time in 2025.<\/p>\n

His introduction to superspeedway racing was turbulent, to say the least.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He crashed just four laps into a one-off appearance in the ARCA Menards Series and found himself in multiple incidents in the Xfinity Series.<\/p>\n

All told, van Gisbergen got caught up in six separate incidents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking with Motorsport.com after his first race at Daytona International Speedway, the three-time Bathurst 1000 winner said he feels at home despite the tough start.<\/p>\n

"You know, I had fun. I feel like I belong here," said van Gisbergen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I feel like I've definitely done the right thing for my career and racing enjoyment.<\/p>\n

"It's been awesome. The people and fans as well are really cool.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's been great to see the response."<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen admitted there was little he could have done to avoid the incidents at Daytona. That in itself was a lesson in accident avoidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At one point, van Gisbergen found himself sliding through the grass, but got himself pointing in the right direction without doing more damage.<\/p>\n

"I tried to like to analyse every wreck, you know all six that I got involved in \u2013 I couldn't figure out a way I could have done things differently," he explained.<\/p>\n

"You know, it's just this style with that racing and something I have to accept.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You've got to run the risk of getting that good result, but you're probably going to get into a crash and it's an amazing mindset to go racing.<\/p>\n

"I've never had to do that before going to race, thinking you know, it's 50-50 whether you'll crash. So, it's pretty different."<\/p>\n

Van Gisbergen will continue his NASCAR journey at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The 1.5-mile quad oval is different again from Daytona \u2013 and the Kiwi believes he has plenty more to learn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
