Coco Gauff<\/a> became locked in a heated argument with the chair umpire during her round of 16 win over Czech player Karolina Pliskova<\/a> at the Dubai Tennis Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The reigning US Open champion and world No.3 dropped \ufeffthe opening set 2-6 to Pliskova but was up 4-2 in the second when an erroneous ruling was made against her by the umpire.<\/p>\n

Gauff challenged a first-serve decision that had been called out, winning her appeal\ufeff to have the point overturned.<\/p>\n

However,\ufeff chair umpire Pierre Bacchi judged his incorrect out call had hindered Pliskova's chances of returning Gauff's serve, so ordered the point be replayed.<\/p>\n

This angered Gauff, who\ufeff argued Bacchi's out call came after Pliskova had attempted to return the ball, hitting the net.<\/p>\n

It triggered a lengthy squabble in which Gauff repeatedly challenged the late ruling before demanding she speak to the tournament supervisor.<\/p>\n

"You called it out after she hit it. The ball was already in the net when she hit it," Gauff said.<\/p>\n

Bacchi appeared to hold firm on his decision.<\/p>\n

"Can you not cut me off for two seconds? Call the supervisor \u2026 You can't deny me the supervisor. I'm going to ask her what the rule is," Gauff continued.<\/p>\n

"The call was a late call. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Everybody here knows you called the ball way after she hit it, it should be my point.<\/p>\n

"Call the supervisor. Why can't you call her?<\/p>\n

"You're going to apologise to me later because you know you messed up."<\/p>\n

All of Gauff's attempts to request the court supervisor to clarify the rule \ufeffwere rejected.<\/p>\n

Replays of the incident confirmed that there had been a significant delay \ufeffbefore Bacchi's call, however the umpire's ruling had little impact on the result as the American teenager progressed to the quarter finals with a 2-6 6-4 6-3 victory.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the match\ufeff, Gauff stated that she was spurred on by the drawn-out stoppage.<\/p>\n

"It definitely gave me some adrenaline," she said.<\/p>\n

"Luckily I was able to overcome that pretty quickly. I'm glad I was able to reset.<\/p>\n

"I think it just fuelled me. I want to watch back the video. It's just one point. It happens in tennis. Players make mistakes, everybody makes mistakes.<\/p>\n

"It kind of went upward from there for me. I was trying to tell myself to stay calm [for] the next point.<\/p>\n

"Sometimes I get angry and I go for too much. I was trying to let that not be the turning point for the set.<\/p>\n

"Maybe I dragged it out a little longer than I needed to, but I did what I felt was best in that moment."<\/p>\n

The incorrect call marked the second controversy involving \ufeffBacchi at the Dubai Tennis Championships after Australian Storm Hunter earlier stopped play for a let call before learning it had come from an adjacent court.<\/p>\n
