Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> will be kept waiting until at least August for Red Bull Racing to decide whether Sergio Perez<\/a> is let go and the Australian is promoted.<\/p>\n

The Mexican's place in the team has been under a cloud for months amid a topsy-turvy run of form.<\/p>\n

With the new season comes a clean slate for Perez, who is in the final year of his contract with Red Bull.<\/p>\n

Perez began the 2023 season strong, finishing either in first or second in four of the first five races.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, he suffered a lean patch at the tail of the calendar, only finishing on the podium twice in the final 10 races while teammate Max Verstappen<\/a> was dominant.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo has been long rumoured as the most likely candidate to take Perez's place if Red Bull decides he should be cut.<\/p>\n

That relies on Ricciardo having the measure of his Japanese teammate Yuki Tsunoda though.<\/p>\n

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko told Servus TV when thoughts of a change might begin and what the Australian has to do to be considered for a promotion.<\/p>\n

"Perez still has a contract for 2024 \u2014 it depends on him," said Marko.<\/p>\n

"If he drives in a similar way to how he finished the last few races [of 2023], then we can easily talk about a new extension.<\/p>\n

"Ricciardo has to show that he has Tsunoda clearly under control. Then he could be a candidate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Red<\/p>\n

"But you asked for a date. I would say after the summer break (in August) you could already have some considerations ready."<\/p>\n

There's every chance the status quo could remain at Red Bull and the sister RB outfit.<\/p>\n

Reserve driver Liam Lawson stands a good chance of graduating to the RB set-up should Perez be dropped and Ricciardo is promoted.<\/p>\n

Tsunoda's place with his ties to Honda mean he's unlikely to be dropped any time soon.<\/p>\n

There have been rumours floated the young Japanese driver could join Aston Martin when they switch to Honda power units in 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
