Is it too early to get excited? That's what every Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> fan will be wondering after he went fourth quickest on day one of F1 pre-season testing in Bahrain.<\/p>\n

However, the Aussie is trying to temper expectations.<\/p>\n

The day's running was dominated by Red Bull<\/a> and Max Verstappen<\/a>. The Dutch driver set a 1:31.344s and completed 142 laps, the most of anyone.<\/p>\n

Ricciardo's effort in fourth, a 1:32.599s, put him 1.255s away from Max Verstappen's best. The 34-year-old completed 51 laps.<\/p>\n

By comparison, teammate Yuki Tsunoda was 13th and 2.792s away with 64 laps under his belt in the hottest conditions of the day.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think, start of the season, we need to be a little bit cautious," said Ricciardo.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure the long-term and big picture is to be fighting at the front of the midfield.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm not sure that we start the season there but I think when we came into Abu Dhabi (the 2023 season finale) with some updates the car felt pretty good.<\/p>\n

"There's definitely some positives but it's clear that we still have some lap time to find.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The general feel and balance is actually okay so it's now just finding a bit more lap time."<\/p>\n

In encouraging signs for Oscar Piastri, his teammate Lando Norris was second for McLaren but more than one second off the pace.<\/p>\n

Norris set a 1:32.484s to end up 1.140s in arrears of the three-time world champion.<\/p>\n

Carlos Sainz started his final season with Ferrari strong, setting the third fastest time \u2013 a 1:32.584s.<\/p>\n

The top 10 was rounded out by Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Piastri and Zhou Guanyu (Sauber).<\/p>\n

Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes did not complete any laps.<\/p>\n

Piastri's best lap time put him 2.314s away from Verstappen and a little over one second away from teammate Norris.<\/p>\n

"First day of testing done for me and it all went relatively smoothly," said the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n

"It was a pretty solid day, and it was nice to be back on track in representative conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We'll see what we can work through over the remainder of the test and aim to get a good understanding of the car by the end of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The car felt reasonable and I would say there are some differences from last year which are moving in the right direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's been a decent start to testing, and I look forward to getting back in the car for day two tomorrow."\u00a0<\/p>\n
