Two weeks out from Melbourne<\/a>'s season opener, 2021 premiership star Angus Brayshaw<\/a> has retired.<\/p>\n

The shock decision, which is solely based on his ongoing struggles with concussion, saw Brayshaw tell teammates on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

9News Melbourne understands the 28-year-old was given a precautionary scan on his brain recently and when the results came back, his footballing future was taken out of his hands.<\/p>\n

Medical professionals instructed Brayshaw to retire, leaving him no choice but to call an end to his career with five seasons remaining on his contract.<\/p>\n

The devastating news has rocked the Demons this week, who are understood to be keen to keep the popular former Pick 3 around in a non-playing capacity for 2024.<\/p>\n

Melbourne teammates and coaches will also rally around the premiership player.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately Brayshaw's final involvement on the football field was the polarising incident with Brayden Maynard<\/a> in September, an action which has since been outlawed by the AFL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Melbourne insiders still maintain Maynard's attempted smother was not a football act<\/a> and the defender, who was taken in the same draft as Brayshaw, should have been suspended.<\/p>\n

But even before then, Brayshaw had a difficult time dealing with impacts of several head knocks.<\/p>\n

The versatile ball-winner resolved to continue his career as recently as four months ago and was training well across pre-season, but ultimately his sixth concussion in the AFL was one too many.<\/p>\n

Early in 2016, he was concussed twice in three weeks and began wearing a helmet shortly after.<\/p>\n

Brayshaw is the second player selected in the top three of the 2014 draft to retire due to the effects of concussion following Swan Paddy McCartin's decision last August<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paul Seedsman<\/a>, Marcus Adams and Max Lynch also retired in 2023 for concussion-related reasons.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old expressed how heartbroken he is to have to give up the game he loves, but declared he will always put his health first.<\/p>\n

"I am devastated that I can no longer play the game that I love, but I respect the verdict of the medical professionals, and the importance of putting my health before my career," Brayshaw said via a club statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"I am really proud of what I have achieved over the past decade. I have been able to live out my childhood dream and while it's been cut short, I am forever grateful to everyone who has been involved.<\/p>\n

"I want to especially thank my teammates, my coaches and the staff at the Melbourne Football Club, for all they have done for me over the years. I also want to thank my family and my partner Danielle for their endless support.<\/p>\n

"To every member and fan, thank you for your incredible support over the journey.<\/p>\n

"Concussion is a massive issue facing our game. I hope from this, a terrible result for me personally, can come some positive outcomes for the future of player safety."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Brayshaw has a very real connection to the impacts of severe head injury.<\/p>\n

He is engaged to late St Kilda captain Danny Frawley<\/a>'s daughter, Danielle.<\/p>\n

Frawley died in 2019 and post-mortem examinations revealed the 56-year-old was suffering from CTE<\/a>, which has been linked to repeated blows to the head.<\/p>\n

Brayshaw played 156 games and kicked 47 goals for Melbourne.<\/p>\n
