C\ufeffanterbury<\/a> have agreed to terms with front-rower Samuel Hughes on the eve of the NRL<\/a> season, according to the club's head of football Phil Gould<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the club's best young players, with his size and power through the middle impressing during a recent trial win over the Storm.<\/p>\n

Hughes \ufeffwas set to come off-contract at the end of this season, but Gould revealed he was set to remain at the Bulldogs on Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles With Gus<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

"Sammy Hughes is a prospect and I think we've just agreed to terms to extend him for another couple of years," Gould said.<\/p>\n

"Sammy's a good kid, I've always liked Sammy from the first time he walked in the door, but he's just had injuries. The pre-season before this, Sammy was at a rock concert and fell over a railing and did something to his back.<\/p>\n

"He came to us late in the season in 2022 and I thought who is this? He moved really well, big tall kid and aggressive … I thought geez, he's a hope.<\/p>\n

"He was spinning his wheels all year and we left him – but he's trained brilliantly during the off-season and hopefully he stands up.<\/p>\n

"He trialled well the other night, but it was virtually only a reserve grade trial."<\/p>\n

Hughes will come off the bench against Cronulla in the side's second pre-season fixture on Friday night, pushing himself ahead of Liam Knight, who has been demoted to NSW Cup by the Dogs in order to improve his match fitness.<\/p>\n

Gould acknowledged the lack of depth in the engine room at Belmore, but is hopeful young players such as Hughes can make the most of their opportunities.<\/p>\n

"I think everyone will point out the fact we are struggling for depth in the middle-forwards area, which is obvious – we know that," he said.<\/p>\n

"We need the ones that we've got there to stand up. We had to expose a lot of young fellas last year that weren't ready for it."<\/p>\n
