Stacey Jones will be appointed the new coach of the Kiwis<\/a> on Wednesday, replacing Michael Maguire<\/a> and beating out the legendary Wayne Bennett<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stuff understands agreement has been reached for Jones to take the team through to at least the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.<\/p>\n

The appointment will be confirmed at a New Zealand Rugby League board meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Jones was an assistant coach for the Kiwis last year and remains an assistant under Andrew Webster at the Warriors this season.<\/p>\n

The 47-year-old is regarded as one of New Zealand's greatest ever league players, who played 46 tests for the Kiwis between 1995 and 2006 and also captained his country for some of that period.<\/p>\n

Jones beat out a number of other applicants for the job, including the veteran super coach Bennett.<\/p>\n

Bennett confirmed in January that he had put his name forward.<\/p>\n

"I've expressed interest in the (New Zealand) job, yes," Bennett told the Courier Mail.<\/p>\n

"I've spoken to the NZRL and I'm waiting for them to come back to me.<\/p>\n

"This doesn't mean I've got the job, there will be other applicants, but the point is I have expressed interest, the NZRL know that and they have a process going on, so I'm sure they will get back to me at some stage.<\/p>\n

"I am waiting to see where it goes. I have been in contact with a guy to make it known I'm keen on the Kiwi job and let's see what happens. I love a challenge."<\/p>\n

While Bennett would have no doubt been a great coach for the Kiwis, there was a feeling inside the NZRL that it was time for a New Zealander to take over the job after Maguire's long stint in the role.<\/p>\n

Maguire was informed late last year he'd have to stand down as Kiwis coach if he wanted to accept the role as the NSW State of Origin coach.<\/p>\n

As Jones is an assistant coach at the Warriors, there are no concerns about any conflict of interest with him, while he'll also have the time to take on both roles.<\/p>\n

Jones, who was an interim coach of the Warriors in 2022, will have the respect of the entire Kiwis team and he'll inherit a squad still on a high from the 30-0 thrashing given to the Kangaroos in Hamilton in November, to win the Pacific Championship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
