Former Australian<\/a> Test skipper Ian Chappell<\/a> believes England<\/a> gun Joe Root<\/a> should drop the "bullshit" Bazball philosophy and play his natural game.<\/p>\n

Root has been the focus of significant criticism in the fallout of England's 434-drubbing at the hands of India<\/a> in the third Test in Rajkot \u2013 their heaviest defeat in terms of runs since 1934.<\/p>\n

Early on day three, England were 2-224 when Root played a switch shot straight to second slip off fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.<\/p>\n

Root had Ben Duckett down the other end on 141 from just 129 balls. His wicket triggered a collapse as England lost 8-95 to be bowled out for 319, a deficit of 126.<\/p>\n

Daily Telegraph (UK) cricket columnist Scyld Berry described it as "the worst, most stupid, shot in the history of England's Test cricket".<\/p>\n

That deficit allowed India to play its own style of \ufeffBazball to put victory well out of reach.<\/p>\n

Root has scored just 77 in his six innings on England's tour of India. His highest score is 29 in the first innings of the first Test in Hyderabad.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Wide World of Sports, Chappell described Bazball as "bullshit" and said Root wasn't suited to playing that style of cricket.<\/p>\n

"Root had a bloody fine record playing normally, and he was a quick scorer playing normally," he said.<\/p>\n

"I don't see why he's trying to change things drastically, and I've never believed you should play premeditated shots."<\/p>\n

Root's average since Brendon McCullum took over is 50.12 \u2013 a touch higher than his career average of 49.32.<\/p>\n

However, in the 20 Tests before McCullum took charge, Root scored eight hundreds at an average of 54.34, and was in arguably the form of his career.<\/p>\n

Chappell said top-order batters like Root should always look to play aggressively given the opportunity, but it won't always be possible.<\/p>\n

Facing a right-handed Jasprit Bumrah, inside the first hour of a day's play, with the ball angling in at his stumps, was case in point.<\/p>\n

"You can't always do it \u2013 it's got to be according to the conditions and also who's bowling," he said.<\/p>\n

"Some bowlers you can score off a lot quicker than others, but when a really good bowler is bowling a good spell, you've got to be prepared to try and battle it out and think to yourself 'Well, when he goes off, it'll get a bit easier'.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You're always trying to score runs \u2013 that's got to be your prime aim. But, you've also got to realise in some conditions, against some bowlers you can score quicker than others."<\/p>\n

It wasn't the first time Root had been dismissed playing a pre-meditated switch hit. He was 'nutmegged' attempting a similar shot against the Netherlands at last year's World Cup.<\/p>\n

But England coach Brendon McCullum has backed Root to continue trying to take the game on.<\/p>\n

"People see a shot like that and go, 'Joe Root is struggling to deal with this new regime', (but) his impact on the game is still very, very significant," the former New Zealand skipper told the BBC.<\/p>\n

"Imagine if this becomes the norm for Joe as well \u2013 with the talent he possesses and the history he's got, what's the ceiling?<\/p>\n

"Do we want just a normal Joe Root, or do we want an even better Joe Root? How many games are we going to win if that happens?"<\/p>\n

McCullum said his dressing room was a "strong place where confidence is high", and somewhere players won't allow "outside noise to seep in".<\/p>\n

"There will be times when we don't quite get it right because it's a hard way to play \u2013 it's asking guys to take the game on and sometimes we have to deal with failure," he said.<\/p>\n

"The upside is hopefully continuing to put bums on seats, make Test cricket more entertaining, we'll win more often and we'll be a team that people really want to follow."<\/p>\n
