This year, the NBA<\/a> wanted more competition in their annual All-Star game.<\/p>\n

But instead, it got more points than ever before, with the clash between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference completely centred around offence. <\/p>\n

In the star-studded fixture on Monday (AEDT), the East beat the West 211-186, with the winners putting up the most points in the game's 73-year history. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe had fun,\u201d captain Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a> of the Milwaukee Bucks said post-game.<\/p>\n

It was a flurry of records at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis – the total points of 397 smashed the record of 374 set in 2017, while the East made 42 three-pointers to break the mark of 35 set by 'Team LeBron' in 2019. <\/p>\n

The sides combined for 193 points in the first half to break the any-half record of 191 set last year, and the East tied an any-half record by scoring 104 by intermission.<\/p>\n

Damian Lillard<\/a> of the Bucks was awarded the All-Star MVP following the event, scoring 39 points for the East, while Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics had 36 and Tyrese Haliburton from the hometown Indiana Pacers finished with 32.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to have this kind of accomplishment, it's special,\u201d Lillard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody was asking what the record was. We found out and went after it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defence was optional and sometimes accidental. There were 14 steals, most of those coming off wayward passes – but otherwise, it was shooting practice. <\/p>\n

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver<\/a> and other league executives were seeking a more competitive All-Star Game after last season's 184-175 matchup was widely panned \u2014 and television ratings plummeted, while Hall of Famer Larry Bird urged players to take the match more seriously this time around. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know what this league\u2019s all about and I\u2019m very proud of it,\u201d Bird said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud of today\u2019s players. I like the game they play. … I think it\u2019s very important when you have the best players in the world together, you\u2019ve got to compete and you\u2019ve got to play hard and you\u2019ve got to show the fans how good they really are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, those pleas fell on deaf ears\ufeff and the All-Star game was again widely criticised on social media, with a litany of reporters and sports media personalities voicing their displeasure during the high-scoring affair.<\/p>\n

The game was perhaps summed up best by this moment from Luka Doncic, who failed to capitalise on an easy scoring opportunity with no opposing players around him.<\/p>\n

However, the ever-positive Lakers superstar LeBron James<\/a> \u2014 playing in his 20th All-Star Game, extending his record \u2014 said there was one big takeaway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good thing that came out of tonight is none of the players were injured … everybody came out unscathed," he said. <\/p>\n
