Three-time Olympic<\/a> medallist Shane Rose's chances of representing Australia in Paris have been thrown into turmoil after he was stood down by Equestrian Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rose, 50, \ufeffhas been reprimanded by the sport's governing body after a complaint was made about what he wore during a fancy dress event last weekend.<\/p>\n

Rose rode out on a horse while wearing only an orange mankini – the skimpy men's outfit made famous by Sacha Baron Cohen's fictional character Borat – at the Wallaby Hill Extravaganza in the NSW Southern Highlands.<\/p>\n

His spot on the Aussie team and his chances of winning a fourth medal now lie in the hands of Equestrian Australia.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Rose spoke to Nine's Today<\/em> on Monday and explained how the stunt came about.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\"Shane<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI certainly didn't expect all this to happen after that," he said.<\/p>\n

"One of my good friends, our team vet, has dressed up in\ufeff a mankini, and he's quite a hairy Greek man.<\/p>\n

"I thought it would be quite funny to go and impersonate him, \ufeffso I put on a hairy suit and a mankini and came in to Zorba The Greek<\/em> with the music in the background.<\/p>\n

"I was having a bit of fun… \ufeffI think came in on another horse to Surfing In The USA<\/em> in a mankini, and unfortunately I've upset somebody at the event, they put in a complaint and that's how I've got into this sticky situation.<\/p>\n

"I thought we were having a bit of fun. Hopefully I get a positive outcome in the next few days."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Rose won silver medals in team events at the 2008 and 2020 Olympics, as well as a bronze at the 2016 Games\ufeff.<\/p>\n

He is considered a leading chance to medal for Australia again in Paris, but he will have to make it there first.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI'm hoping in the next few days there will be an outcome and it will be positive for me," he told Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffBut whenever something like this hangs over you, it is scary.<\/p>\n

"It's a major part of my process, getting to Paris, so hopefully we can come up with a solution that is positive."<\/p>\n

A petition has been launched trying to get Equestrian Australia \ufeffto list the stand-down.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the governing body released a statement which provided hope for Rose's Paris ambition.<\/p>\n

"To be clear, Shane has not been suspended or sanctioned. As is usual in these circumstances for all high performance athletes, he has been stood down from competition for several days while the review is carried out," a statement said.<\/p>\n

"This does not affect his ability to train or otherwise participate in the sport. Equestrian Australia has also encouraged Shane to provide an account of the events if he wishes to do so.<\/p>\n
