He has long left the country<\/a>, but Eddie Jones has managed to deliver yet another blow to the battered solar plexus of Australian rugby via an exchange captured in Stan's behind the scenes documentary.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe three part series, titled 'The Wallabies – Inside Rugby World Cup 2023<\/em>',<\/a> premieres on Thursday and features unprecedented access into the team's inner sanctum.<\/p>\n

In one of many fascinating scenes in the third episode, coach Jones demands the Wallabies train the day after their devastating 40-6 loss to Wales in Lyon in October.<\/a><\/p>\n

The defeat was the heaviest in Australian World Cup history and all but ensured they would fail to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's the problem mate. We've got no hardness about us," Jones tells veteran prop James Slipper on the training pitch in Saint-Etienne (watch the exclusive video in the player at the top of the page).<\/em><\/p>\n

"Like, you know, game hardness is different than any sort of hardness – when you just stick in the f—ing game and do it.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"Like, there's none of that in Australian rugby now. And that's where the big gap is, mate. Like you look at those Welsh players, mate. They play 30 games a year. They're hardened, tough players so they can just stick at it. They know they've got to do it. And we've just lost that in Australian rugby."<\/p>\n

Slipper, who is renowned for playing through the pain barrier, listens intently to Jones but does not respond verbally.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"We're not not <\/em>tough, but we're not trained to be tough now and we're not used to playing tough," Jones continues.<\/p>\n

"Like it's an exception to play tough now rather than the normal. It stands out like dogs' balls, mate. Because they are good players and they care a lot, the players, but they're just not hardened to play Test match rugby consistently. Set up for failure mate."<\/p>\n

The scene is likely to further anger Wallabies players and fans burned by \ufeffJones quitting on Australia just 10 months into a five year contract to take on a new job with Japan.<\/p>\n

The first episode shows Jones encouraging, and perhaps pressuring, Slipper to play through a knee injury against South Africa in Pretoria.<\/p>\n

Slipper "popped" his MCL when a scrum collapsed at training and was in doubt for the first Test of Jones' reign in July.<\/p>\n

"You'll know. You've played enough Tests to know," Jones tells Slipper as he sits out training.<\/p>\n

"You've just got to keep working on it and make it a priority. Like sometimes you play better with injuries, the good players play better with injuries, mate. That's why they're good players."<\/p>\n

\"James<\/p>\n

Slipper would go on to captain a side thumped 43-12 by the world champions.<\/p>\n

"He said that I'd make the right decision and then walked off," Slipper said.<\/p>\n
