All Blacks ace Scott Barrett admits Joe Schmidt's Wallabies defection<\/a> stings while giving the new Australia coach the ultimate \ufeffcompliment.<\/p>\n

Barrett was coached by Schmidt in 2022 and 2023 as he played a key role in piloting New Zealand to the Rugby World Cup final.<\/a><\/p>\n

Former Ireland coach \ufeffSchmidt worked as a selector while also taking ownership of the All Blacks attack and hooker Dane Coles recently said the Kiwis would not have reached the final without his influence.<\/p>\n

All three episodes of the brand new Stan Original Documentary Series<\/strong><\/em> The Wallabies – Inside Rugby World Cup 2023<\/strong><\/em><\/a> premiere February 22, only on Stan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

"It's certainly slightly tender, when he's been involved with the All Blacks," Crusaders captain Barrett told Wide World of Sports at the Super Rugby Pacific season launch in Auckland.<\/p>\n

"But it's the way rugby is, a global game and we've got coaches of different nationalities coaching different teams."<\/p>\n

Schmidt came off contract with New Zealand after the World Cup and did not fit into new All Blacks coach Scott Robertson's support team.<\/p>\n

\"Schmidt<\/p>\n

He was eagerly snapped up by Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh and friend Peter Horne, RA's new director of high performance.<\/p>\n

"I was really impressed with Joe, he had a big impact on our game," Barrett said.<\/p>\n

"And we've obviously seen what he's done with Ireland over the years. He's sharp and passionate about what he wants out of a team so that's a huge asset and acquisition for Australian rugby. He'll be great for the Wallabies. They are in good hands there."<\/p>\n

Similar to predecessor Eddie Jones, Schm\ufeffidt's relentless, round the clock work ethic is legendary.<\/p>\n

Barrett also compared him to one of New Zealand rugby's most revered figures.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's a real rugby head, similar to Wayne Smith. He watches a lot of code. He knows a lot of players from different club competitions, different nations, he does his research and he knows the players and he knows the game so he drives habits within teams.<\/p>\n

"All the little things at training which add up to be pretty huge."<\/p>\n

Barrett also joked that Schmidt's "boring" self assessment<\/a> was not entirely accurate.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's got plenty of energy about him. He doesn't drink much coffee but you'd think he'd be five a day with the energy he brings. He's cool."<\/p>\n

\"Crusaders<\/p>\n

The Bledisloe Cup battle between Schmidt and Robertson will be fascinating and Barrett stressed that 'Razor' was also making an early impact with the All Blacks.<\/p>\n

Robertson picked Barrett as his Crusaders captain and it would not surprise if he does the same at international level.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"If that conversation arises, it's certainly something that I'd consider," Barrett said.<\/p>\n

"But for now he's put it on us to play well for our clubs."<\/p>\n

Barrett also \ufeffsaid his famous family had rallied around younger brother Jordie, who missed a crucial late penalty during the agonising World Cup final loss to South Africa.<\/p>\n

"That's the heights of competitive sport isn't it," Barrett said.<\/p>\n

"I feel for him, naturally, as a brother and as a teammate. But he won't be defined by that moment in his career.<\/p>\n

"He's got youth on his side to have another crack at the World Cup.<\/p>\n

"He'll be deep down pretty gutted by that moment. But he'll use that as fuel in the next four years to put himself back in the position where he can do it again."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
