S\ufeffouth Australia<\/a> looked in danger of beating its own record for lowest ever Sheffield Shield<\/a> score when the Redbacks lost three wickets for zero runs.<\/p>\n

The state already holds the unwanted history of having the two smallest innings totals in Shield history.<\/p>\n

The Redbacks were rolled for 27 by New South Wales in 1955, and then sunk by the Blues again for 29 in 2004.<\/p>\n

\ufeffAnd on Friday at Adelaide Oval, they narrowly avoided adding another measly total to the list.<\/p>\n

After winning the toss and electing to bat, South Australia\ufeff lost Jake Fraser-McGurk, Kyle Brazell, and Nathan McSweeney before they had put a single run on the board.<\/p>\n

Opening batters Fraser-McGurk – Australia's supposed next Glenn Maxwell in short-form cricket – and Brazell made it through the first 10 balls of the match before Fraser-McGurk \ufeffwas caught by Brisbane wicketkeeper Jimmy Pierson off Xavier Bartlett.<\/p>\n

Three balls later it was Shield debutant Brazell who nicked off to Michael Neser.<\/p>\n

And McSweeney was also caught by Pierson, edging a Bartlett delivery that forced the 'keeper to dive impressively to his right to glove it.<\/p>\n

Brazell had been presented his Redbacks cap by Callum Ferguson before play.<\/p>\n

\ufeffSouth Australia managed to put some runs on the board before the next wicket fell but Harry Nielsen (0), Alex Carey (49) and Ben Maneti (7) all fell before lunch on day one.<\/p>\n
