When Manly<\/a> is brought up around club legend Paul Vautin<\/a>, he has one immediate thought.<\/p>\n

Luke Brooks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The half made the move to the Northern Beaches after a torrid time with the Tigers and has already impressed in a Manly trial match.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBrooks put on three try assists against a second string South Sydney side last weekend, in a 68-6 win.<\/p>\n

It's a positive sign for the Anthony Seibold<\/a> coached side that finished a disappointing 12th in 2023.<\/p>\n

When asked how Manly will improve this season, Vautin's immediately drawn to the form of two players. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"F\ufeffirst thing I'll say is they've got a five-eighth in Luke Brooks, that's going to make a big difference," he told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"Josh Schuster<\/a>, I'm not sure why he was playing there, to me he is a back-rower, they tell me he's fit, which is good, and he can do some damage in the back row. Brooks, he'll change the way they play.<\/p>\n

"It was all on DCE last year, and he can play his own game a bit now and do a bit more running .<\/p>\n

"Brooks is an outstanding player so I think they'll have a good year."<\/p>\n

Throughout the trial match, Brooks partnered brilliantly with the man competing for Schuster's second-row spot, Ben Trbojevic.<\/p>\n

Trbojevic finished with a hat-trick, just days after inking a fresh deal with the club<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His teammate Schuster comes into the 2024 season, \ufeffclaiming it's the 'best pre-season' he's had despite setbacks including chickenpox, a fractured finger and calf strain.<\/p>\n

After stints in the halves, the 22-year-old is now set for a permanent home in the back-row, with Seibold declaring ahead of the season he wants him to play like Glenn Stewart and Wade Graham. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Vautin agrees Schuster can perform that ball-playing\ufeff role but wants him to stick to the basics.<\/p>\n

"He can do that, (but) to me if you're a back-rower the first thing you've got to do is hit the line rather than try and do tricky stuff," he said.<\/p>\n

"The no-look passes, personally I'd get rid of that because a couple ended up in the grandstand, it's a good skill to have but it sort of stopped working for him.<\/p>\n

"I think he'll have a good year Josh Schuster, he looks fitter from photos I've seen of him.<\/p>\n
