Golf<\/a> royalty Tiger Woods<\/a> endured a rollercoaster return to the professional circuit, \ufeffshooting 1-over par in his first round since last year's Masters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And the 15-time major winner gave fans his worst, and then his very best, in the space of two shots late in the day at the Genesis Invitational.<\/p>\n

Woods, 48, was sitting at even-par for the day when he drove up the middle of the par-4 18th hole, playing alongside close friends Justin Thomas and Gary Woodland.<\/p>\n

A relatively simple pitch shot up onto the green seemed a fait accompli, until Woods completely shanked his second shot right and directly into a large tree.<\/p>\n

His ball dropped in the middle of several trees, stunning himself and the hundreds of onlookers who were following him up the fairway.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Posture set-up, club position, looks identical to every other shot," commentator Frank Nobilo said.<\/p>\n

"Ball slightly below the feet, maybe a little on the up-slope, but still…"<\/p>\n

Nobilo's fellow commentator noted, \ufeff"Everybody's been there, but it is odd to see that happen to that man."<\/p>\n

Woods' third shot looked impossible to get onto the green, given he had about a metre-wide gap to work with and had to get it uphill and over bunkers.<\/p>\n

But, somehow, the sporting legend produced one of his best efforts of the day, chipping the ball onto the green and to about 12 feet from the cup.<\/p>\n

\ufeff\ufeff"Pretty darn special right there," Terry Gannon said in commentary as fans cheered.<\/p>\n

Woods missed his par putt but managed to save bogey, carding a 1-over for the round and putting himself in with a chance of making the cut.<\/p>\n

He later explained what happened on that disastrous second shot on the 18th.<\/p>\n

"My back spasmed, it had been spasming the last three holes," he said.<\/p>\n

"It just locked up on me and didn't move, didn't rotate, and presented hosel first."\ufeff<\/p>\n

The hosel on a golf club is the bottom of the shaft that connects to the club head\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Woods carded five birdies and six bogeys – parring seven holes – \ufeffwhile hitting eight of 14 fairways, and had 30 putts\ufeff in his first professional round in almost a year.<\/p>\n

He has drastically scaled back his professional appearances since a car crash in February 2021 that badly damaged one of his legs.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut his opening round at Riviera gave some hope fans will see him more on the PGA Tour and at majors this year.<\/p>\n

"My round was a little indifferent," Woods said.<\/p>\n

"I struggled with the speed of the greens, even though I made a few. They were a lot faster than I've ever seen Riviera before.<\/p>\n

"I felt like I missed a lot of greens today, and I was stressing out on \ufeffthe short game."\ufeff<\/p>\n
