Rugby league<\/a> great Sam Burgess<\/a> has spoken extensively and publicly for the first time since his \ufeffexplosive and sudden exit from South Sydney<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 2014 premiership hero \ufeffleft the Rabbitohs in a firestorm at the end of last season<\/a>, being sacked as assistant coach after speculation he had been undermining his boss Jason Demetriou.<\/p>\n

He fell on his feet with a deal to coach Warrington in England's Super League.<\/p>\n

It will be his first foray into professional head coaching, and he's now revealed it may not have happened if not for NRL supercoach Wayne Bennett.<\/p>\n

Bennett coached Burgess at the Rabbitohs and the pair formed a tight bond.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I was finishing up at Souths and this just came up. A lot of people advised me to take a bit more time but Wayne Bennett told me, 'Go do it. It's the only way you're going to learn'," Burgess told the UK Telegraph ahead of his Super League coaching debut.<\/p>\n

"It was a sliding doors moment.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't a plan but it was a great opportunity outside my comfort zone.<\/p>\n

"I wanted to be a head coach in the long run and I thought this was just a great fit. It is such a great club to be part of."<\/p>\n

Burgess, still only 35, played 182 NRL games for South Sydney before chronic shoulder problems forced his retirement in 2019.<\/p>\n

His life was then altered by an off-field spiral as his marriage fell apart and he went through a number of legal issues relating to former wife \ufeffPhoebe and her father.<\/p>\n

"When I first retired I had a rough time. I did not have a purpose or a drive and I really struggled with that," he told the Telegraph this week.<\/p>\n

"For such a big part of my life, for so many years, I had that sense of belonging to a group and having a responsibility. Almost instantly that had gone.<\/p>\n

"In that time when I was away from the game I was just totally lost. I don't find many things hard but I found that period very hard to manage. I didn't make great decisions.<\/p>\n

"I didn't know how to manage it emotionally. I didn't understand how I was feeling. It's something I wasn't equipped for.<\/p>\n

"I had to go and spend a lot of time working on myself and understanding those feelings and emotions which young men really don't do a lot of."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
